1964 2010 diesel injection pump
1964 2010 diesel injection pump
I rebuilt my 2010 crawler about a year ago. I had the injection and injectors rebuilt by a reputable shop. When I started the engine, the smoke never cleared up and it missed a lot. I thought I had made a mechanical error somewhere so I pulled the head and checked everything out and could not find anything wrong using the deere manual. So I called the injection pump shop and asked a few questions, he told me not to cut the wire to adjust the pump advance. Well I cut it anyway and adjusted the advance quite a bit and now it finally runs great, no misses and without any smoke. My question is, when it comes to starting I have to glow plug it for a full minute, is that normal? Thank you.

The glow plug may not actually glow. Usually what you are heating is the manifold. This is why you cycle it more in the winter. In the hot summer you dont really need the glow plug as the engine and intake manifold will already be warm.
The only glow plugs I have ever seen were on the cox airplane motors. Otherewise the hot rod diesels of the old one lungers, but they are a different breed altogether.
If your batteries are good you can start a diesel even in the cold, but it will smoke like hell! Generally if you start it this way in the winter you will want to let the engine run till it stops smoking. Also if your diesel is turbo powered, let it idle a minute before you shut it off, and tape that exhaust if you plan to haul it down the road.

1010/2010 will not start without glowplugging at probably any temp below 80 degrees or more. The glow plug on these engines is directly in the pre-combustion chamber as opposed to a manifold heater. There are 4 of them, and if even one burns out or has a bad connection, it will affect the way they start.

my 1010 will not start without glowing,as Lavoy says this is a pre-combustion chamber diesel.
once started, you turn key back to glow while the engine is running until it clears up and stops farting and smoking.
these engines also have a distinct "rattling" sound at idle....also due to this camber design.
my vw rabbit diesel was the same design,no glow plugs...no starting.

Lavoy, when I first got my 1010, I bought it thinking it had a bad cylinder because it was skipping and smoking like a forest fire.
I got it for next to nothing because the owner thought it had a dead cylinder as well.
I tested compression and all four we good,I did find one bad glow plug,so I replaced all 4,thats when I was told by an old timer to glow after it starts....keep glowing until it runs smooth and no smoke.
the first time starting with good glow plugs it smoked so much I was worried the fire dept. would come out!!
