Motor Oil

To me, the important thing is to make sure the engine oil has a "C" (diesel) service designation as indicated by API. "CF" service designation is specifically indicated for indirect diesel engines; however other diesel engine oils will work. You will need to avoid engine oils formulated only for gas engines ("S" service designation):

I use a multi-grade oil in my 2010 diesel, specifically 10W-30 since it was originally specified, but it is a little harder to find everywhere and I know many others use 15W-40 (Shell Rotella or similar) with no problems. All of my post is predicated on a indirect injected diesel engine as you have in the 1010.
I know Digitup and others that run equipment commercially may have better answers than I.

Hi,
I run Shell Rotella-T 15w40 in most everything, and have for decades. I know of many folks that ran it in their farm and industrial equipment and trucks, and never had oil related issues.
We used to use Kendall lubricants for everything, as that was what we used in the old JD dealership. Kendall made a lot of changes in the early 1980's, though, and so we changed to Shell at that point.
It's been in the 420c and 'M' ever since, and was in my JD350 and various other gas and diesel tractors all along. I use it in my 78 Honda GL-1000 Goldwing and it has 160k miles on it. I even used it in race cars, although I tended to use straight-weight 40 or 50 Rotella in those (depending on the air temp).
The only place I don't use it is in road cars with catalytic converters. A lubricant chemist friend told me, long ago, not to use it there as it had an additive that would poison a cat if the oil were burned in any quantity. That probably no longer applies since Shell has changed the formulation many times since I heard that. I still use Castrol in cars with cats.
Anyway, nothing that I ever used Rotella-T in has ever had a lubricant related failure.
Later!
