Help Newbie 440 ICD won't move

Post by RSVRDE » Sun Jul 17, 2011 3:02 pm

Have a chance to get a 1960 440 ICD from a neighbor. It will start just fine but will not move (been sitting in a shed for years). The reverser moves just fine as does the shifter. It will shift gears even with the engine running. Pulled one of the steering clutch inspection covers and nothing moves in there with the engine running. Both pedals move but left pedal does not have much resistance. looked at linkages as much as possible and everything seems to move? Is it worth trying to pull this to my house as there is not much room in the shed. Will a Ford 5640 tractor pull it? Tracks etc do not seem to be frozen up. It does have the front bucket, can I push it backwards using this to get it out of the shed? It also comes with a model 51 backhoe however this is not attached at this time.

Any help or advice is appreciated

Joe

Broken pilot shaft would be a start. The reverser could be not engaging even if the handle moves back and forth. Does it actually knuckle in when the handle is moved in each direction?
The left pedal is the clutch. Could just be a weak pressure plate.
If you get it and pull it apart, replace everything while you are in there such as clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, etc.

Maybe you can check in the reverser through the drum plug. Have a helper at the commands trying to move in first gear and look if something turns in there. If not then problem is around the main clutch. Would like this better than a broken something in tranny/reverser or final area. Another cause could be a stripped differentiel. You could hear a bad noise in the backend... Like JD440ICD says, replace clutch disk, pressure plate, bearing while there. Lavoy has a good kit wich includes these 3 parts. I just purshased it recently.

My 440 (gas engine with the 602 blade) weights around 8000 lbs. I guess the 2-53 engine + loader can add a 1000lbs more. I don't know what you tractor can pull!

Does the reverser snap when you shift the lever? Ask the neighbor how he has been shifting the reverser. If he has not been using the clutch, then he may have torn the tabs of the clutch discs, but it should work in one or the other, it normally does not affect both clutch packs.

The reverser moves easily but does not snap, I can watch the reverser shifter rail move forward and backward. I suspect the clutch but wonder how it would be stuck disengaged. The owner is an older gentleman who does not get around much at all, if I catch him while he is up I can ask more questions but that is not often (took months last time) The only quote is the famous "it ran when I parked it" So I have some real detective work here

Since the reverser does not snap in either direction, there is a slight chance that it could just need adjusting. The service manual walks you through how to adjust it.
Also make sure the reverser has the correct type and quantity of fluid in it.

I agree with making sure fluid levels are correct, but it would not keep it from moving unless it was freezing weather and overfilled with possibly some water tunred to ice in it.

Make sure the bracket that moves the reverser is actually turning the shaft. It is located at the bottom of the rod that connects to the handle.
