battery box

420:
battery box bolts are broken off in the crawler and i cannot get them out - easy out, penetrating oil and heat have failed. was told i could just drill em out and re tap holes but am worried where the metal scraps will go below - do i have to worry about causing damage? have a battery box which i presume is off a 420 and want to install it as im not sure how to keep the battery from banging around especially with that gas tank so close. thanks.

Nothing under there to hurt, don't worry about it.
I have hold downs and rods on hand, as well as new battery trays.

thanks Lavoy. Any suggestions on drill/tap sizes. prolly use a lock washer.

Having been through this exercise I would suggest starting with 1/4 coarse (tap drill 13/64) and if that doesn't work then 1/4 is the tap size for 5/16 coarse and replace what ever size bolts you end up using with stainless. And use never seize! Keep in mind that bolt head needs to be BELOW surface of battery box so as not to rub on battery. That is why 1/4 is the best

If you can go back to 1/4"NC, that is what I would do. Like Joe said, not a lot of space there.

I bought a set of "left hand" drills which have helped me in the past. Since they drill counter-clockwise, sometimes they act as an easy-out and remove the offending bolt. If not, then I move on to the next step.

I also used stainless steel bolts and Never Seize on my battery box bolts - I added a piece of old rubber floor mat between the box floor and battery for cushioning. On the advise of others, I added a rubber boot over the neg battery terminal to reduce the risk of a spark so close to the gas tank.

I used to use those cans of expanding foam that you can get at Home Depot to hold the batteries in on my dump trucks; Just center the battery in the battery box and squirt the foam in all around the battery - I guarantee it will not move around after you do that. Of course, the problem of how to get the battery OUT of the box when the time comes will show up down the road.

It is easy to keep the battery from banging around, just use the components that Deere designed in 1953, they work just fine. The problem is not the hold down, it is the people that throw them away or do not replace them.
A hold down and rods is $20, a burnt up crawler, or a dead operator are a lot more expensive.
