1010 steering adjustment

Post by outback farm » Mon Jul 25, 2011 5:41 pm

I have recently aquired my first JD 1010 crawler. The tractor runs fine but the right steering brake only grabs in reverse. I am about to start to trouble shoot the issue and wonder if anyone has any suggestions? Is this a simple adjustment? or a steering clutch replacement? Any help would be welcome. thanks

I assume the steering clutches for the 1010 is similar to the 2010. If so, then look at my post "2010 Repair" for pictures of the clutches removed, opened up, assembled and installed. There is a brake band positioning screw under the clutch housing that keeps the brake band in correct placement around the brake drum. Make sure it is still there and in place. Maybe the brake band is offset.

Other than that, there is an adjusting screw on the top side to increase brake band tightness around the drum.

If you can obtain an Operator's Manual for your machine, it goes through the very specific steps to make this adjustment. As stated in the manual "The clutches and brakes, as well as their linkage, are so related in their operation that the adjustments must be made in a certain order. For that reason it is very important that the adjustments be made exactly as explained on the following pages" If you would like to e-mail me, I can forward the info to you.

Thanks! I was able to get the service manual online from Deere and found the section on adjustments. Thanks again.

Where did you find the manual online? I went to the Deere.com website but can only order hard copy manuals. Thanks!

I just opened up my 1010 steering clutch adjustment area. From the looks of the 2010 photos, the 2010 and 1010 have very different steering adjustments. Let you know how I make out after following the Op manual instructions for making the adjustment.

I found the manuals online at:

http://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/

I searched under construction equipment 1010 etc.

I also found some printed at:

https://techpubs.deere.com/

How did you make out with the adjustment? I opened the access plates, but I'm having some difficulty with the adjustment procedure.

I cannot figure out why you need to "adjust the steering control rod until the shortest distance beetween the ball joint is obtained" just to then re adjust the steering control rod back again. by "adjusting the steering control rod so that the throw-out bearing contacts the cultch fingers".

The difficulty I am having is I cannot see the clutch fingers. Is this done by feel or am I just missing something here?

I'm having the same issue... how do you know when the throw-out bearing contacts the cultch fingers, without seeing it happen?

Wish I knew a cheap mechanic!

You can feel it, just like freeplay in a foot clutch.
