1960 440 Crawler Final Drive Installation

Post by Josh Eshelman » Sun Mar 12, 2006 8:37 pm

I'm trying to reinstall the final drive on my 1960 JD Crawler 440, and I'm not sure of the correct order of the gears, bearings, etc. I'm looking for a diagram of this so I know I'm putting them back in properly because I was not the one who removed them. If anyone has one, or knows of a website that I could visit to see this or get it printed out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

If you do not have a parts and service manual, get them. A diagram of installation order is not sufficient, there are bearing preloads and such that need to be considered as well.

Josh,

Lavoy is right, if they are not put back together properly you will just be doing it again in a few years. I got my manuals from local Deere dealer. If you dig back through the posts I remember seeing someone has them available on a cd. I have both finals apart on my 440IC since November, I am trying to get some time back home in order to rebuild and re-install.

Josh:

Check some of the older posting for CD manuals. Lavoy is correct, without the manuals, you will very likely not get them back together correctly. Once you see how it is done, they are rather easy to get back together. Follow the instructions carefully for seal installation and bearing pre-loading.
