a 1010 deader than a door nail

Post by Randy Richards » Wed Oct 19, 2011 6:46 pm

Hello, I just rebuilt the generator and then installed a new regulator on my 1010 diesel w/ 6 way blade. It ran well a week ago and yesterday I went to start the old girl and it had absolutely nothing.... no click, no anything. The battery is charged but it is a no go. Have any of you guys any suggestions on what the culperate might be?????????????? It seems that the 10 / 12 years I've had this machine it n e v e r ceases to fail me with something going wrong almost evert time I use it. A true drain on my fiscal responsibility Thank you...

It could be the starter.
You might also check the solenoid for the starter and associated wiring.

Dirty or loose battery cables (either end) will do it every time. It will even effect the rate the generator charges the battery when running too.

How did you check the battery? Cranking amps is what is needed, not just voltage. You can also check the voltage drop across the battery terminals when cranking. If it goes to near zero, then the battery is bad.

I tend to agree with Mark- if everything else was working a week ago I would first suspect the battery. I have had batteries that seem to be fully charged but have a bad plate and are essentially dead. I bought a load tester that really helps. the batteries will show a full charge with no load and then when load applies show on the load tester as being shot.

A loose or corroded ground terminal to battery will also have the same symptoms.

Another heads up: Make sure that your battery cables are in good shape and properly sized. Corrosion inside the cables or too small a cable will cause problems too.
When I bought dozer batteries in the past, I bought ones designed and sized for my particular dozer - they are more shock resistant and you have less internal problems from plate separation and internal shorting. Good luck finding your particular gremlins. Paul

Hey Randy -- Same thing happened to me. It was corroded post inside the solenoid. Take a look. Greg

As others have said, check the cables as one of the first things. When I got my 40c it came with a brand new battery but it would turn over. Very well to do guy owned it and his estate manager gave up trying to figure out why it would not turn over. I got it for the as-is price :D. Took me and a family friend about an 1/2 hour to narrow it down to a bad ground strap, which looked fine.

A good multimeter on the battery and a clamp-on ampmeter will tell you what's going on. Test When it's running and the draw of current when stopped.

You can buy parts to rebuild the starter from an auto-electric shop. I got an armature and bendix after ours cooked. Lot cheaper than getting the whole starter.

sounds like your cut out relay in the regulator did not open when you shut it down last time.

is it connected properly?
