Steering clutches and brake

I'm really new to these machines. I picked up a 1010 a couple weeks ago and it steers good to the left but when I steer to the right I pull the handle and I can hear the click like I do on the other side but it barely stops the track anymore. I have to pull on it a lot harder than the other side to get the right track to stop turning. Is there an adjustment somewhere or is this something with the brake for that track. I also don't know where anything is on this machine to check for the brakes and clutches, does anyone have any pics they can send me of taking one apart.

The first thing you need to do is get factory parts and service manuals, then go from there.

Lavoy has a good suggestion that having the operator and service manuals will have diagrams and the specs to properly adjust the steering clutch and brake band for each side. Even if you saw photos or diagrams online, you would still likely need the manuals.

You don't need to buy the parts manual because it is available online as a PDF at www.jdparts.com. You need to look for the "1010 crawler tractor" manual even if you have a loader; the base crawler parts manual has the steering clutches.


The 1010 has mechanical ("dry") steering clutches which disengage power to the track and allows sweeping turns, and a brake band that allows for tight steering and stopping. The timing of the steering clutch disengagement and brake band application have to be adjusted and timed properly or there will be issues with disengagement and stopping. It can also be that you have rust on the steering clutch and/or oil on the brake band which can also cause loss of disengagement and stopping power, but you should check adjustment first. There should be inspection ports (plates) on the top of each steering clutch housing to get an idea of the problem and to perform adjustment.

1010s are similar in operation to 2010s, so if you look for the photo diary that Pammark created and posted on here it will help you to understand the systems a little better.
