Trouble keeping my 1010 running

I was clearing brush on a slope with my 1010 about 6 weeks ago, and ran out of gas. I refueled it, and it will start and run for about a minute, then die. If I try to start it again, I don't even hear the starter turn. If I leave it for several hours, I can start it and it will run for about a minute, then die. I have put a new battery in thinking it was getting drained, but that didn't help.

I was having the same problem with my 1010 gas crawler. It ran fine for a while then it would stop. I ckecked everything I could think of. Removed carb, checked for pluged fuel lines, cleaned gas tank, checked for electrical problems you name it I checked for it. After ten or twenty minutes it would start up and run fine for a while then do it all over again. Could be ignition switch??

I experienced the same symptoms with my 420c -- would start, run for a minute then die. Had to leave it sit for a couple of minutes before it would start then die, etc. I thought it was a classic case of gas line problem but couldn't find a problem in the fuel system. I replaced the ignition condensor and that cured my problem -- it's a cheap and easy thing to try.

Take The Elbow Off The Carb. Where The Fuel Comes In... Theres A Screen On The End Of It... Its Plugged Up.... I Did The Same Thing, When You Run Them Dry All The Fine Dirt Ends Up In That Elbow.......

Hi,

Yep. The carb inlet screen is plugged. I've had this happen several times over the years. It's odd how the tank can have all this very fine crap in it for years and never come out into the fuel stream. Yet run it dry one time and it all comes out to plug that filter screen.

What's happening is that some small amount of fuel gets by the screen while it's sitting, and that's enough to let the thing fire up after a bit. However, the flow rate is nowhere near what even idle speed uses, so the thing shortly stops running only to repeat the process.

Cleaning the screen is easy. Pull the elbow out and reverse flush the screen with a can of spray carb cleaner and you'll be good to go - until the next time you run the silly thing out of gas, that is! :p
