Owner says it is a 5 speed?? When did they change from a 4 speed?? Has a reverser. Runs good but ring and pinion is bad. Is this a commom problem on the 420?? How expensive are the parts to repair?? Dave

5 speed became an option in 57. Ring and pinion is a lot of work, means complete teardown to bare tranny case. I would guess $700-$800 by the time you are done with R&P, bearings, seals, gaskets, etc.

I know its lots of work as I have done many tranny/clutch jobs on these but no diff. issues. I am learning it is a quite popular problem. I just never ran into it. Spoke to the owner at length and he was nice enough but detected there is more going on with this unit. He is asking $2750 which I feel is high. I would be a player at $2000 at the most if it is as good as he says it is. It also has a reverser that works correctly?? That will be a first.

Yes he is the guy in Columbia. NH. May take a look at it this weekend and go from there. I asked were it came from and he changed the subject. He lives a few miles from the famous Nash Equipment. If it came from there I wont be expecting much. They do have some decent stuff but it is usually priced very high.

I was just by Nash Equipment earlier today.
Old Eddy was known far and wide for his horse trading. Saw that 420 on CL too. Looks real clean in the photo.

Nash

I sold a JD 450C I had this fall to a guy in Maine for $10K. He was trying to get the price down so I took him over to Nashs to look at the same size and year machine. They wanted $19,500 for a worn out piece of junk. Passed. When we got back to Errol he handed me the $10K and was in a hurry to load my machine. Left with a smile on his face. Dave
