Winch Types for a MC

Post by krob » Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:34 pm

Hi Guys,

Brand new to the board, I've got a pretty simple question that i haven't been able to find using a couple of quick searches so.... here it goes.

My father has a MC, that he would like to get a winch for. What winches are usable, and acquirable that would mount onto the back of the MC.

Additionally we have a home grown angle blade that shift the center balance forward and thus a little weight on the end would help balance out.

I could only find a couple picture, im trying to upload them.

Thanks
Rob

Here is one of the pictures.

The angle blade was a home grown creation and works great for pushing snow of our road.

The name on the blade came from a over exuberant young man many moons ago who found a can of red spray paint and had just finished reading a history of some battle where Soldiers used a large dozer to take an objective...the author stated the dozer had Natasha painted on its side....since then the name has been repainted a couple times.

(I cant remember if it was a Battle in the Pacific during WWII or a history on one of the Israeli conflicts)

Not many options on MC, none will direct mount due to the one piece PTO shaft. Any shaft driven winch like Ramsey will mount up and work if you can get a line from the input shaft to the PTO shaft for a chain to run.
I have an old Braden that came off of an MC or BO Lindeman, unfortunately too damaged to salvage.

Why not look into a hydraulic powered winch? http://milemarker.com/?page_id=13 has winches from 9K to 18K designed to run off a vehicles power steering hyd. system. You would have to build a mount to get it on your crawler but it looks like you have the hydraulics.

If were going to do this i would probably prefer a direct drive just because of duty cycle and since i would presume they are stronger....However how reliable, strong, etc. are the hydrolic winches like in the link. Ive never used them.

MC winch

as Lavoy says I have a Ramsey winch mounted on my 40c and chain driven from pto, very strong , just have to make your own mounting brackets, I welded a big nut unto the drive sprocket so that in a pinch it could be turned backwards

Keep in mind 8 GPM at 900PSI will develop about 4HP, won't run much of a winch, or at least will run it really slowly. At that, you will be well below the oil quantity recomended for motor use.
We used to run a real small hyd winch on a grain auger with 40 and 420. Maybe the size of a 2500lb winch, and it was painfully slow.

I was figuring that going hydrolic would result in a very slow winch.

I may look into these Ramsey's however i am betting they are spendy any ideas on where to start looking? Also any certain model numbers i need to be looking for.

Anyone have any pictures of the winch and then how they mounted it?

Thanks

Braden Winch fo 40C

Post by BradE » Sat Apr 07, 2012 5:06 pm

Hi All,
new owner of a 1955 40C. I found a Braden winch not far away. It's been left outside for more than a few years. The yoke and "engager" is rusted a lot. The brake band seems to work, but the tall lever that engages the winch has broken off about 6-8" below what I think was the top. The cable is on it, but that's pretty rusty.
There's a chain drive from the rear PTO. The chain doesn't align vertically from the PTO output shaft to the winch, angling back a lot. I wonder if this is normal. I wouldn't think so.
I'm wondering what it might be worth not knowing if it could be made useable or not.
