steering clutches

Post by Adriano » Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:53 pm

Just purchased a 440 icd serial # 459727, not sure of the year. This is my first crawler. The previous owner changed the steering clutches on right and left side. Only the right side works. Before I go tearing into it, is there any kind of adjustment that can be done? If I have to tear into it, what should I look for.. The previous owner was thinking to remove a steel plate??
Any ideas would be grateful.

Get a factory service manual and parts manual prior to doing any work. Most likely something was assembled incorrectly.

If one side works and the other does not, then open up the top inspection plates and note any differences in the linkage hook up or adjustment. The throwout bearing should press the pressure plate fingers just before applying the brake band. See if you have spring resistance with the steering arm depressing the pressure plate. Compare both sides. If they seem the same and still the clutch does not open, you might have stuck fiber and steel plates.

I guess if you determine the plates are stuck, you could try pushing against a large tree to see if the clutch releases under a load. If still stuck, then it is tear apart time.

See my post "2010 Repair" for pictures and description for the fun you are about to have.
