40C hydraulic pump rebuild

Post by krusty » Sat Apr 21, 2012 1:40 pm

Hi gang,

Have been using my 40C with a PTO driven hydraulic pump that has been rather funny looking. Also since it is not a live PTO makes working a bit of a challenge.

Finally got a 40C engine driven pump to rebuild. It is in fine shape with no scoring but needed bearings and seals which is a simple fix. Hope it works when it goes back together after all this though. Will make me super happy if it does.

On the input shaft to the pump there is supposed to be a washer and o ring, but when I took it apart it was a 1/2" deep double seal which seems much better in function. It has a CR part number but my 2 local bearing shops cannot match it.

So I plan to put in either a single or (2) 1/4" seals. Same shaft diameter and seal hole.

Thoughts as to whether I should go with 1 or 2?

The pump you have is an M series pump, not a 40, that casting was never used on the 40. To get parts for it, use the M parts book, not a 40 parts book.

Hummm that explains a few things. It seems as though it will bolt in without issue. Is the parts book for it online? I know the 40C is. The gaskets seem to be pretty much the same otherwise.

It is just this seal that is causing me grief.

As always....thanks Lavoy!

Found the parts manual on the JD website. Sure enough it has the seal and explains the few subtle difference. Looks pretty much the same otherwise.

Correct, there are several changes, but nothing you would realize from the parts manual other than the seal. It will bolt up and function the same though.

Got my seal from the local JD dealer and all put together and installed yesterday. Since I do not have factory HD lines it is a mishmash of custom made hose and man it is tight for space for those lines the way the intake and exit run up instead of to the side.

Anyways all runs well and am pleased with it. This eve will be spent welding up a tank out of 1/8" plate that would be sized the same as the OEM tank.
