440 name plate

Post by 440 iron popper » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:27 pm

Hi,

My crawler has its original serial number tag but it is pretty beaten up. 440 IC serial 443712. Is there some place when I can get a new one? Not on Steiner website... Lavoy?

Is there some practice in the restoration process that says we have to keep the original name plate?

Thanks,

If it is still readable, it's possible that John Deere would replace it for you. I know Digitup and others have stated that Deere has replaced their mangled data plates, but that was on newer equipment.

Remember that the serial number plate is essentially like a VIN number and is the means by law enfocrement of identifying stolen equipment so not likely you will find the data plates for sale that often.

After a long process, you may be able to get a new tag from Deere, but most reps really don't give a damn about doing it, so it may or may not work.
There is a company in Iowa I think that makes repro tags. Not exactly like original, but real close. The replacement tag that comes from Deere will have a barcode on it, so not even close.

Thanks for the replies. You're right Tigerhaze. From a legal point of view, I understand that they would limit the sale of this kind of plate by the dealer only and as a replacement. I've seen those reproduction tags on steiner online catalogue. Mostly for single letter tractors, generators and starters. Unfortunately none for 440 IC. After the repair is done, I would like to punch the infos on a nice new nameplate and keep the old one for the reference.

Lavoy, if you can get one that would be nice. I'll send you a PM anyway because I have some other parts I need.
