gearmatic winch installation on 440 crawler

Post by dondeere » Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:52 pm

I just restored a gearmatic winch and am in the process of installing it on the crawler, took the cover off the PTO housing and see that there is a male 21 spline shaft. On the John Deere winch mount there is a gear on one side to mate to the winch and on the other side there is also a 21 spline male shaft. Is there a special coupling that goes on or do I have to change the complete shaft in the John Deere winch mount housing?

Same coupling as used on the PTO shaft, seems to me $50 or so.

am going out today to see if I can find one, was going to try and use the front part of a drive shaft yoke from a 21 spline drive shaft, will cut off 3 inches and use that. Its hard to find an actual PTO coupler in my City.

gearmatic winch not working

Post by dondeere » Mon Jul 16, 2012 9:24 am

have it all installed, but the winch does not work, It will not winch in or out, the winch is turning inside when the pto is engaged, but when the lever on the control is activated it does not make it engage. Is there any tests that can be done, the controller has been rebuilt, new clutch hose and nipple, new lines, etc, etc, any ideas?

I pumped and pumped and cracked open the lines and nothing but pure fluid came out...............but still nothing. If you open the barrel bung inspection cap you can see it turning, but when the levers are moved it just keeps spinning and nothing happens?, thinking maybe the linings are slipping or its way out of whack on adjustment. After all that work and money am disappointed.

You have to look and see that the clutch slave cylinder is expanding. Just because you have fluid at the fitting on the side plate, does not mean that the cylinder itself is not full of air. The clutch slave cylinder has to move virtually immediately upon moving the master control lever. Once that has been checked and still no clutch, most likely you are looking at a clutch band adjustment issue or some other mechanical problem, but still most likely related to the clutches. It will work, you just haven't found the problem yet.
