High oil pressure

Post by AllenS » Sat Jul 07, 2012 8:37 am

When I bought my 1955 JD 40C, the oil pressure and temp gauges didn't work. I bought new gauges through Steiner and the have the right replacement gauges. After installing them I started it up and the oil pressure is maxed out on high (actually past high). I changed the oil filter (AH 1082R) and the oil (Valvoline SAE 5-30). Started it up and the same high oil pressure.

According to the parts book, there is a regulating plug on the oil pump. Is this accessible from the outside somewhere or does one have to drop the oil pan and reach it from there?

Any other ideas what could be the cause?

There should he a large nut with an Allen bolt just below the oil filter.
Loosen the nut ,
Back out the Allen some.
Check pressure again.

I don't have a large nut with an allen bolt under my oil filter on the 40C motor. I wish that I did. I was wondering if I removed the three bolts holding the oil filter assembly on the block if I could access it. I noticed in the picture of the gasket that there is two open slots, one which will allow the oil to return from the filter. Maybe the longer one will access the regulating plug. Somebody here has done this before.

I just looked in the service manual...
The pan has to be dropped and the regulating plug is above the screen and pump.

Thanks, Duke. It ended up looking like that was the only way to access it. I started to look at removing the loader, a frame and blade. Might be a good idea to invest in some 6 x 6s to drive up on. Does your service manual tell how many turns out the regulating plug should be? Any other information will be welcomed.

Lavoy, do you sell oil pan gaskets for a 40C?

2 or 3 washers behind the spring.
Is alwaYs good to test with a master gauge.

I don't have a master gauge. Maybe I'll have to take it to the JD dealership in town.

Check with a a parts store.
May be an inexpensive part.

Do you or a friend have another tractor that you can take a gauge off of and hook it up tempory to make sure the new gauge is working right. What area do you live maybe someone on here lives close to you. If you have a new gauge don't always mean it is right they are made by humans and we all make mistakes. It would be a shame to ajust the oil pressure to make that gauge show right only to find out later that it was a bad gauge.

I have a 1946 JD model H and a 1949 JD model A that I could use the oil gauge off of. I guess I'll give it a try. I'll use the one off of the H. It's not as high off of the ground.

I just took the hood off of my International model H and that and the Super M won't work.

This oil gauge screws into the oil filter base and the one for the model H is for dash mount, according to the catalogue that I have. They are two different gauges, both 1/8" NPT however. I don't think that it will work.

The John Deere gauge is only 12? psi max. With new bearings and some one that may have recently rebuilt the engine, stands to reason why your pressure is high. You could try a thin synthetic oil first before you dig into that pan. Otherwise you could try a $20 Sunco gauge and probably find it is pumping around 30-50 psi.

Personally I would leave it.

PSI is 25 for this gauge. I think that if the pressure isn't lessened, it will blow this gauge out. That's probably what happened to the one that was in it when I bought it. I also replaced the temp gauge because that was stuck and didn't work. Oil pressure and temperature are important things to know when it is running.

Make sure that it is indeed reading that high before dropping the pan, but yes, if you get to that point, gaskets are no problem.

Bought a new oil pressure gauge from Carquest this morning and installed it. This gauge goes up to 50 psi. The John Deere gauge doesn't show numbers, just indicates high and low, and it had a psi rating of 25. Started the 40C up and the oil pressure measured 35 psi. That is good. I can see now why the JD gauge read so high.
