Pipe Plugs

Post by AllenS » Tue Jul 10, 2012 5:27 pm

I drained the old transmission fluid out of the transmission housing and also the two final drives, and replaced with new 80-90 gear oil. While I was under there, I noticed two other plugs on the very bottom, towards the rear of the transmission housing. I took both of them out and am wondering what they are for. This is my 1955 JD 40C.

These are for when you clean out your clutch packs.
Usually dry.
Sometimes oil leaks into there.

I am not sure if it the same, but my 2010 has two plugs under the steering clutches. The inside tip had a 3/8" finger sticking up about a 1/2 inch. This is the brake drum allignment prong that rides in a slot on the underside of the brake band. It is used to keep the brake band from sliding sideways off the brake drum.

It should be dry inside. Excess water or oil coming out may indicate some future issues.

Yes, it's dry in there, I was wondering what they were for. This is my first crawler.

If your top covers leak or come off you have a way to drain the water out.
Best answer I have.
