Smoke

Post by Jim DiDomenico » Sat Sep 22, 2012 7:23 pm

Hi,

I've only had my 1010c for a month or so and I've not used it that much but I have noticed that it sometimes smokes, blue, oil smoke... It isn't consistent and doesn't seem to be lacking in power as if it had a loss in compression. The only thing I have noticed is if I'm working on a hill (across the grade not up and down) it seems to smoke more. Could be a coincident but when I returned to level ground it stopped. Any ideas? Should I run a compression test?

Does it seem to make a difference which side of the engine is down? It might be oil collecting in the head/valve spring area and when one side is low the oil works in around the valve stems. Just a thought. Are you noticing much oil consumption?

I was working left side down grade. It's hard to say about oil use... It has all new fluids and I topped the oil off after about 25 hours of work, less than a quart.

I once had chevy 327 that smoked more going up a steep hill. Removed
the valve covers and found the oil return holes at the rear of the heads almost plugged. Cleaned them out and problem was much less. Oil pooling
around valve stem seals was most of the problem. Drummer

Maybe over full of oil. Might be the wrong dipstick. Greg

Have you checked the breather cup out to make sure that it isn't overfilled?

Hi,
I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. I do not understand what you mean by the "breather cup" - I'll try to figure that out - do you mean the air cleaner bowl? As far as the dipstick is concerned, I can only assume it is original but don't know for sure. The best way to describe it is that it is a dipstick that has a rubber gasket that can be tightened into to place. It looks original as it is the same yellow paint as the rest of the tractor but who knows.

A simple way to check dip stick accuracy is to change oil and filter with correct amount, then check on your dipstick. Greg
