dipstick
hello while looking my 420 dozer over i noticed that the dipstick is on the left side but i have read that its supposed to be on the right side. mine is a 1958 .#133146. i bought from the original owners son who claimed it was never worked on before. im i missing something or is the motor earlier than thought? thank you..Eric.

The engines in 430's had a larger dip stick/oil refill inlet on the right side. As with most change overs, they used the parts they had at time of production. Yours got the older block with the smaller dip stick on the left.
I owned a 430W that had the block casting for the larger dip stick, but it was not drilled out and had the smaller dip stick on left. I guess that one "almost" got the new dip stick.

Your dipstick is correct. If you look at the 420 parts manual, the 420 never had the RH dipstick from the factory. I have owned and seen several very late crawlers and tractors that have the boss for the dipstick, but was never bored. Keep in mind that the 440 was made the same time as the last year of the 420, so the later style block was in production, and as has been stated, when existing stock of the old blocks was used up, the later block was installed.
After two cylinder production ended, the later block was also the replacement block if you bought a new block from Deere. Same thing occured on M, 40, and 320, the 330 block was the replacement block after existing stock was used up, so you sometimes see 330 blocks in 40's and 320's.
