Detroit injector question
Detroit injector question
After all these years, I finally find myself with a 440ICD, got it in the shop right now fixing on various items. It starts hard, pretty much like all of them, but tends to miss on one hole for just a few seconds at start up, then smoothes right out. Figuring one injector is hanging up, or getting bad, so looking at putting injectors in it. I have never done it before, how much of a job is it? Not worried about the R & R portion, just setting after they are installed. Lost my manual some how, won't have new ones til end of the week.
Also, assuming the engine still has S series pistons, should I put S series injectors back in, or switch to N series?

setting the rack is not that bad i have a 6V53 hardest part is setting the high rpm (as is always said on here GET the book it really is simple with it).......when setting the high end it sounds like its gonna blow any minute being 2 stroke it sounds like its turning twice the rpm that it is.... the 6V53'S top end is 2850 sounds like 5700 RPM stand next to that and turn a screw while someone else is watching the tach and pointing up, up, up,

Thanks for the replies, Ben sent me the manual, and I talked to a local guy that is a two stroke wiz. He is going to stop in next time he is in town and take a look at it. By the time I am done with finals and who knows what else, he will probably have been here.

I adjusted the governor using a cheap electronic laser tachometer I bought on eBay. I set the low idle at 785 rpm and high speed idle at 1910 rpm which seemed to work best for my machine. Gil

Lavoy,
You know what they say about opinions and advice? LOL
I would stay with S 35 if the pistons are S. No way to actually know which they are unless the head is pulled or you know the guy that rebuilt it.
If it starts real hard but the compression is still decent, my bet is they are S pistons.
Replacing injectors is not a big deal. DD has them rebuilt (core trade) for a resonable price.
They do have to be timed properly and that requires a little tool from DD.
At 40 degrees, my 2-53 with N kit will white smoke immediately and crank in a few revolutions.
About 55 degrees and above, you just need to look at the ingition key real hard and it will start.

In the shop at 60 degrees it starts pretty good, only worry is a real short term hiccup on one cylinder, but hit the throttle and it disappears instantly, same thing when warm. I think I will let my guy set everything correctly and see how it acts. If it still bothers, I will put injectors in later, hit some major snags today on this crawler, so way too many other problems to worry about injectors now.

A buddy of mine has a 2-53 in a welding machine , his does the same thing , starts like a camp but one cylinder hesitates and takes a second or two to pick up. he rebuilt the engine in it when he got it and he's after changing the injector's , lift pump etc with no luck on it firing on 2 cyl's on start up. he just learned to live with it.

Must be a 2/53 gene pool thing as mine also does this--will start up a little rough, then I'm assuming the other cylinder kicks in sort of like a turbo sound and after maybe 15-20 seconds she's running like a LOUD putty cat.
