This one had rubber line, looks to be original, never checked the manual, but all the fittings match. From tank to filter is copper line, but obviously not original on this one.
I went with a high end hose, I think called Pushlock or something like that. Real neat setup, never seen it before. I actually took an extra 6 feet and a bunch of fittings to have on hand just in case. Rated for pretty much every fuel or solvent, pretty good suction, and up to 400PSI.

Glad to hear it's running.
Mine had rubber line from the tank to filter and then rubber from filter to pump.
Any idea why they smoke when trying to start them?
Can you give a diesel too much fuel when starting it cold?

My guess on the smoke is incomplete combustion on a cold cylinder. The 53 series is noted for not generating sufficient compression heat, that is why they start hard, and why the higher compression N series pistons start better. As soon as it runs even a little bit, this one cleans right up.

Ben,

I concur with Lavoy on the white smoke. It is atomized diesel compressed but not enough to combust.
I started my 2-53 in 42 degree temp this weekend with no external heat. It took about 20 or so seconds for it to "hit". Once it hit, it was running.
It puffs out white smoke from the first crank.
I guess you can get too much fuel in a cold cylinder. I start mine with the throttle cracked about 1/4 open. If it does not hit soon I pull it back to idle so that it does not pump too much fuel in.
Much of the fuel is blowing out anyway since it is atomized vapor.

Do you have N series pistons in that one?

Lavoy,

Yes, that is the one I rebuilt last year. It has all new "guts" including "N" pistons and N35 injectors.
It is pretty sweet.
I let it sit a while and did not have a charger on the battery. Had the battery been hotter it would have started quicker.
Your recommendation of going with the "N" series is most appreciated, made a lot of difference.

Thanks guys, I figured the white smoke was just unburnt fuel and normal.
I'm slowly figuring out the optimal throttle setting for mine. The problem with mine is the small spring on the buffer screw is bad, so I have no "idle" and I can't find the spring anywhere.
I need to find a close match and see if it works.

Ben,

It is a long shot but places such as TSC carry a variety of springs. May want to look there to see if something could be made to work.

Bringing this back.
I know we're a little ways off from winter but I figure I'll forget to ask later.

What's the status on the heaters Lavoy.

I need to get the plates laser cut yet, just got put on the back burner for the time being. Pretty much everything lined up, just the plates left.

Lavoy,
Any progress on this. I was hoping to get one and get it installed for the winter this year.
From the sounds of things, you're probably in need of one right now too. Pretty cold up your way right?

Yes, teens below it seems like every night.
Did a little more work on it this week looking for other alternatives just in case there was a better option. Still back to my original idea. Will post as soon as I get them done.
