420 tranny oil level and other newby questions

Post by dkeyser » Tue May 30, 2006 7:51 pm

Hi,
I just picked up a 420 crawler yesterday and it starts and runs great, here are a few issues I was hoping I could get help with. The first, i pulled what I think is the tranny fill plug on the left side and I an not touch any fluid. Does any one know what it takes? The idlers need bushings, where can I buy them? Also it won't turn left. it goes right fine, but no left. I have also notcied when I am pushing something the right track will stop spinning and the left on e will keep going. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am very excited to start moving some dirt. This thing has a huge gearomatic winch on the back that te previous owner says will pull anything as long as you can stop the crawler from going with it.
Thanks,
dennis

Tranny fill plug is located on the RH side basically under your right heel.
Idler bushings are a Deere item for the time being. I can get them for you if you have no good local dealer.
Clutch problem may be just an adjustment, may need replacing. If you do not already have them, get the parts and service manuals, they are a must have.

SAE 90 W GL1 oil in the trans is the JD recommendation. I get my GL1 at NAPA but most real parts stores should have it or be able to get it.

Thanks,
What are the two plugs on the left side just about under the gas tank on the tranny?

Tranny quits at the dash, anything under the gas tank is just hollow center section unless you have a real late 420, then could be reverser.

It does have a lever on the right that puts it in forward or reverse, also does any one know the diameter of the muffler?
Thanks,
Dennis

Muffler should be 1 7/8 inches ID.

Well I purchased a 2" one on a guess an it was to small, it fit inside of the straight pipe. Also I am sure there is a reverser on it, which means am i supposed to add oil to the fill plug on the left side under the gas petcock?

Well, I just got home and pop goes the right track. Does any one know where I can get a repair manual, and any hints to put this track on would be great. The master pin is on the top right after the drive sprocket.
Thanks,

There is no fill plug on the center section. There may be a small cover that can be opened to grease the throwout bearing.
I have a couple of reprint service manuals left.
