1010 diesel limp
A while back, I posted about a slight skip(limp/misfire) on one cylinder on my 1010 diesel. After getting your suggestions about it, most of us agreed that it was probably an injector malfunction. I finally got it in the shop and cann't determine which cylinder it is. It only skips when the engine is at ease. It doesn't seem to do it every cycle. When it does miss, it puffs a slight whitish blue smoke. As soon as any stress is added to the engine , it smooths out and runs great. With it running, I loosened each injector supply line individually and observed the engine's firing change. It appeared to be the same for each cylinder. I cann't determine the limpper. I have no fancy instruments to help so I'm asking you guys how to proceed. It had been down to about 4 degrees overnight and warmed up to around 15 when I started it. 3 minutes glow plugs. 2 squirts on the primer, and a slight whiff of starting fluid as it rolled over(I know that can be a bad idea) it fired up. Not too smooth or pretty for the first minute or 2, but smoothed out so I don't think my little limp is too serious. Thanks for reading and any suggestions. gregjo1948

Lucky you didn't blow something up, you never use ether with glow plugs.

Lavoy--That's why I said "bad idea". Besides scolding me for my use of starting fluid, do you have any ideas for me to try? Thanks, gregjo1948

I have had one do that too, and really struggled with it, never really came up with a solution to it. Once warm it pretty much disappeared other than at idle. That one also started a little hard too.
You could have the injectors tested at a diesel shop, maybe something would show up there. What serial number is the crawler? Later crawler have better injector pumps, and cheaper to repair injectors.

tigerhaze-- thank you--I'll try changing the timing a touch both ways and if that doesn't help, I'll pull the xmanifold loose and fire it up to see who's puffing. Lavoy-- I don't have the serial # at hand but, I think it's an earlier model. I was into the pump about a year ago but did nothing with the injectors. gregjo1948

Early injectors are the worst, only parts are Deere, and the last 4 tips I put in were defective, so had to go back to the old ones. The guys that did mine were able to fix up my old ones though, so worked out in the end.
Seems to me mine was affected by timing as well.

You may be able to figure out which cyl it is with a infrared hand held thermometer and check exhaust manifold temp for each cyl close to the head. This has worked for me in the past.

Cooter--Thanks--I don't have one to try and I don't think it skips enough to see a temp difference. gregjo1948

Hi,
I dont use an IR thermometer, but instead an IR video camera. Those can see the temperature drop from one misfire as a few degrees drop in temp at the manifold where attaches to the head. They show temperature as color, so changes are very apparent.
The problem is, of course, the cameras cost more than these crawlers do. But, maybe you know someone that uses one to troubleshoot industrial equipment and sweet talk them into dropping by. That works for all my friends!

I'm still puzzled with the initial thread. Does it mean that the symptom disappeared when the lines were loosened one at a time or that it continued to misfire under that condition? If the symptom continued then the problem is probably not an injector.

original possum---It's like pulling a spark plug wire off on a gas engine. If it runs worse when the wire is removed, then it's not that cylinder or if it gets worse cracking open an injector fuel supply line,(on a diesel) then it's not that cylinder. gregjo1948

YES, each cylinder got worse. Each one started skipping consistently as I loosened the fuel supply line. I was unable to determine which cylinder had the original skip. gregjo1948
