Main Engine Pressure Plate Adjustment
Main Engine Pressure Plate Adjustment
Good Evening All,
The clips on the pressure plate shown are covering the adjustment bolt for the pressure plate fingers. Do I just pry these clips off in order to adjust?
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks Dave

Do you adjust these fingers on a main clutch? I thought adjustment was done at the pedal. gregjo1948

Yes, I have an adjustment tool I purchased from Lavoy.
Another question just out of curiosity...
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between an MC flywheel and pressure plate vs. a 440 (wheel tractor) flywheel and pressure plate? The reason I ask is because I have a very nice MC flywheel and pressure plate, they are better than the ones I have for the 440. Is either part, flywheel or pressure plate, interchangeable?
Thanks Dave

Should be the same as long as 440 gas.

While reading through the clutch section of 420 service manual I came across the following statement:
"It is of the utmost importance that pressure plate with cushion springs be used with solid hub-type driven disk. Similarly, pressure plate without cushion springs must be used with cushion-type driven disk."
The reason I found this particularly concerning is that the assembly I was working on yesterday has the cushion springs on pressure plate and the new driven disk is a cushion-type.
Is this truly a problem??? I am not very far into the reassembly process, just got engine bolted back on, so now would be a good time to find out, before I get any further.
This is on a '58 440I wheel tractor.
Thanks!

If you have a cushioned pressure plate, it must be old, they have been obsolete for a long time. The plate isn't truly "cushioned" in the same context the disc is, it is just some small tabs under the adjusting bolt, still don't understand what they really do.
Either way, not likely to hurt anything, but I have pressure plates on hand if you want a non-cushioned plate.

It is an old pressure plate out of a parts MC, but it is in almost new condition. I have not decided what I am going to do just yet. I must admit, the wording "utmost importance" from the service manual worries me.
How much is the non-cushioned pressure plate?
Thanks - Dave

Plate is $100. I would not worry about what they are saying. If you are concerned, you can break the cushion tabs off and pull them out, then you will have a standard plate.

JT,
Here is a picture from the 420 service manual of the pressure plate showing the cushion tabs and a picture looking down into the starter hole at cushion tabs my pressure plate.
Lavoy,
Another question, maybe a stupid one, but I'll ask anyway. When clutch pedal is depressed, what stops the travel of the throwout carrier? Do the fingers bottom out on the pressure plate or does something else stop it?

Normally your foot will bottom out on the footrest stopping further travel. If you put your heel on the pedal, you can sometimes push far enough to bottom the fingers, or you just run out of travel and something else bottoms.
