1010 oil consumption

Post by username » Mon Mar 17, 2014 4:16 pm

My 1010 gas uses 4 quarts of oil per hour with no engine leaks and does not foul plugs.

You can't do much with it as runs out of power in low gear trying to do most tasks.

I have about 50 ton of sand stone to level tomorrow so that should keep me busy for a while.2 gal per hour fuel and 1 gal per hour gets pretty expensive for 20 hp.

I don't deserve any sympathy as I have a 2010 sitting here with a blown hydraulic line between the engine and frame.

It has a new undercarriage but has a home brewed 6 way blade with tons of slop in it and a worn out hydraulic pump that makes it terrible to grade with.

My 680 hoe has water in the rear which froze and will not move and has a fuel delivery problem and will not start.I also lost first and second gear due to a bad input shaft bearing.

Aside form those issues, all is well.

Run a compression test on it, for that kind of consumption, you should have some smoke.
Switch to a straight weight oil if you have not, that may help some.
Make sure there is no restriction anywhere in the air intake system, that can lead to higher than normal oil consumption.

When you are out and about if you run across Paux. Phill you might see if he has any way to get some moisture to west Texas.

With that kind of oil consumption, I would think it would be hard to see the blade thru the smoke. If you don't add oil every 15 minutes, you risk totaling the engine. I'd say,get this job done, then rebuild your engine. gregjo1948

Hi,

A gallon an hour? If it is going thru the cylinders, it ought to smoke like Mt St Helens when she's mad. If you have a belly pan on, you might have a leak and can't see it on the ground. Belly pans hold a lot of junk which will soak up a barrel of oil.....

I was about 45 minutes leveling the sand stone and it was above full when I started and did not read on the stick when I was done.It smokes bad and has severe blow by but leaks very little as the belly pan is clean.

My friend who had this dozer said it was lazy and used oil but I never anticipated this kind of consumption.I operated Komatsu 455's that used oil and went through 2 gal in a 10 hour shift and I thought that was bad.

The engine was overheated and developed a crack in the head at one time and it was replaced with ahead with seats and valves in poor condition.

I have a 165 G that I am getting ready to stuff in it but it needs some head work.

Just an update on my 1010.I found a real nice head on Ebay and swapped the 165G engine. It runs excellent and I have been pushing back deep frozen snow banks in third gear.No smoke or blowby but I do see a little oil seeping from the cylinder block gasket but I'm hoping that it might stop after time but not an issue if it does not. This dozer will probably only see 20 hours of use each year but it is nice to have around if you need it,if the clutches don't stick from non-use.

I have a governor or throttle issue I have to tend to.It goes from idle to half throttle right now and sounds like it might be running fast at WOT so I have been running it at little lower.I hope it is just an adjustment.

I have a 440 John Deere crawler and it has started to throw out oil so that it comes out of the muffler. It is black even though the engine and diesel oil are nice and clean. It has a diesel engine and has seem many hours of work. I put oil additive in the crankcase and in the diesel fuel ,but it hasn't helped at all, Where is the oil coming from?Could it be coming from the diesel fuel right into the engine or just from the engine oil?. When it is running it does not smoke out the muffler. If it is coming from the crankcase I suspect that is sticky rings or scored piston sides It happened slowly over the past year but now it is really bad. Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way,the diesel is a Detroit. which John Deere used when building the crawlers. Mine was built in 1960 Bob

Black liquid out the stack on a Detroit is often bad injectors.

I think it's possible that the seals on your blower could be bad or as you said before about the rings getting bad.

I took the top off of the injectors and started the engine and oil came shooting out of one corner and it was a lot of oil in a second or two. seemed like it was way way way too much. Would that be an injector?
