440 ICD Temp Gauge

Post by jac » Sat Jul 15, 2006 9:26 am

Trying to get my temperature gauge to work after painting my machine. It was working before. Not sure what was original for at 1959 440ICD, nothing in the manuals, but this has a one wire temp sending unit and a JD temp gauge (not a capillary unit). How does this wire in? Wire from the sending unit obviously goes to the gauge, the other terminal on the gauge goes to??? I tried ground (+) and nothing happens. I tried (-) and the gauge goes to a max reading.

Bad sending unit? Bad gauge?

Are replacements available?

I think the other terminal on the gauge is to hot wire. If it goes to max, usually that means the sending unit is bad.

Lavoy:

Do you have a replacement sending unit and gauge or know the PN?

Jac
Make sure you don't have a short in the wiring between the gauge and the sender, that would also make it go full scale.
in my parts manual, PC-609 page 85-2 gives a semi-wiring diagram, not much use without wires labeled. It shows the sender to be item 12, AT11118T. I would think you might be able to check it with an ohmmeter. I would guess at something like 200-500 ohms for a good one. 0 ohms = bad, shorted and infinate ohms bad, open. The resistance probably decreases as the temperature increases.
If this helps.

Bryce:

Thanks. All new wires so I know it is not the wires. I will check the sending unit with a multimeter and see what it reads. My temp gauge is original so it is not in the best shape either, so will test it also.

Checked out enerything, bad gauge. Got the PN's and checked with Deere, rediculous prices. Stewart Warner still makes these for Deere so I contacted Stewart Warner and here are their PN's

Gauge: SW 82351 (positive ground 2 1/16" black face temp gauge)
Sending Unit: SW 280EA

Total for both is around $57 versus about $170 from Deere. No "John Deere" on the gauge but I can live with that.

John,
Just a wild idea, but if you already talked to them once, maybe should get the oil pressure gauge numbers from them as well?

Lavoy:

Oil pressure gauge is SW 82349 (positive ground) and can use sender SW 279 B-F or SW 82893. You can check all of this on the following website http://www.stewartwarner.net . This is not the SW website but a distributor which has an on-line catalog. The positive ground gauges are in the "Deluxe Instruments" section. Once you have the correct numbers, most auto parts stores can order you the parts.

The official SW website is http://www.stewartwarner.com . They have a help section where you can send them a note. They responded to my question in 1 day.

Hope this helps.

FYI: my machine is almost done!!! Everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for all your help.

JAC,

Is your 440 a diesel crawler or a gas crawler?

Nice to hear you're about done. Wish I could say the same!
