Battery float charger/desulfator

Post by 2010OWNER » Sat Aug 09, 2014 10:34 am

FYI,
Five years ago I bought one of those high end float chargers to put on the brand new crawler battery (30H). It was supposed to make the battery last up to twice as long.
Well, I went out to start the crawler a couple of days ago (last ran in April) and found the battery about half charged and it won't take any more from the regular charger.
Before I bought the high-tech float charger, I used to leave my conventional battery charger hooked up to the crawler and plugged into a timer that would allow the charger to run about 10 minutes a day. That battery lasted 8 years.
In daily use, my pickup battery lasted 11 years, my SUV lasted 9 years.
I have two more of those fancy float chargers on other pieces of equipment and am thinking they may be doing more harm than good.

Hi,

I do not use them as they tend to slowly boil off water, and the resulting concentrated acid does the plates no good in the long run.

I use a 2 amp charger with a timer. Set it to 2 hours once a week if I don't use a machine. Keeps the battery up, doesn't boil off the water when I am not looking.
