air filter and alternator/generator protection

Post by notmeu » Sat Sep 20, 2014 7:11 pm

Hello all, I have been using my 56` 420 crawler a lot lately for grabbing some firewood which is the usuall thing to do this time of the year. With cutting trees down and cleaning up the mess there has been a little problem has happened to me 3 separate times causing damage and I wouldn't think that I am the only one out that has this problem, but when pushing brush piles of tree limbs to a central location away from where the trees were cut down, there seems to be a pesky branch that will pop up and make contact with my air filter, putting a nice dent in it, or making contact with the alternator and breaking one of the mounting tabs, which I just replaced a alternator this past weekend. Other than pushing smaller piles of brush or buying a chipper, which isn't a option right now, has anyone out there make any sort of protection weldment for this issue? I was thinking of cutting a new front brush guard in half and welding it onto the existing brush guard covering these damaged parts then bolting it onto the upright tubes that fasten onto the top of the front brush guard. I wouldn't think there would be any air flow issues keeping the motor cool. Any other ideas out there or am I the only one with this problem????

Hi,

Deere had a different nose cone style brush guard for the 420 which had side shields. Different from the commonly seen one which just protects the radiator grill. I don't seem to be able to find a pic of one, though.

Thanks Stan, I never seen one myself. I will look at my parts manual again. Maybe there is a illustration of it in there.?.?.?

Hi,

Good idea. I will pull out my manuals and look as well. I had thought I had seen pic of it here on this site, but can't find it. Perhaps it was in one of the Deere books....

It was somewhat like the grill guard, with sides and a top so it looked more like the later nosecones, and so covered up the area you are having trouble with. I don't recall if it had side shields like my 350 had or not....

Hi,

I went through all my manuals, even the unloved I+T ones, covering the M thru 430. Not one pic. I even thought to look in the manual for the 62 blade.

All I see is an exploded view diagram on page 50-8 and a parts list on page 50-9 of the parts manual for the 420-430 series, PC-505-(2-63). Titled 'Heavy-Duty Protective Equipment'.

Looks like it all replaces the tin nosecone and separate grill guard. They call out a different hood, AM3999T, so it must also be thicker metal. There are side plates with drilled holes for cooling. They hang the rub strip for the blade frame right onto the nosecone. They call out an extension for the air cleaner, so it must relocate rearward.

The "hard nose" attachment is a bunch of stuff, really can't be duplicated, only way is if you had an original one.

Ahh! I found a photo of a "hard nose" 430 online. It sure makes finding one a lot easier when you know what the proper name of it is. Thanks fellas for your help!

Hi,

Following the link, I wound up on the main page for the auction site.

I see why. There is a period at the end of that link string which ought not to be there.

The pics don't show a relocation of the air cleaner. Wonder why the parts manual shows it?

Air cleaner is in the same location, but is a different air cleaner, and then there is a special pipe that relocates the intake to the center of the hood.
Pretty sure the crawler in the pic was a buddy of mines.

Hi,

Ah. It is hard to figure out just where parts go when only looking at the parts manual. Meaning, not having the bits on a machine.

I only ever saw one of these hard noses, and it was actually a hard tail, being on an industrial forklift variant of a 420. Of course, everything is backwards on one of those. ;)

Edit - a 420 wheel tractor forklift. Not a crawler one. The memory served to at least recall such a thing existed. :)
