440icd finals options

Post by allpinball » Mon Oct 20, 2014 9:54 pm

Just picked up a 1960 440ICD. one axle bearing was out, munched up the gears pretty bad. It has the 14/55 tooth gears.

I see some sellers offering new gears, but only for the 13/56 setup.

Any leads on a 14/55 gear set?

I found a complete final unit near me, but it is the 13/56 set. I wonder if I should pick that up then convert the other side to 13/56 also?

Has there been a 14/55 gear set change hands anytime in the past decade?

How not straight would the machine drive with 14/55 on one side and 13/56 on the other? About 2% off, I guess? Anyone done this?

1010 - what's different?

Post by allpinball » Mon Oct 20, 2014 11:06 pm

I see a lot of talk about 440 and 1010 parts interchange - with most answers being "no".

Has anyone put 440 and 1010 gears side by side and described their differences? Same diameters? Same tooth count? Same spline count? Same spline diameters?

I realize they may not be directly interchangeable, but maybe with minimal machining, depending on what is same/different?

No, they will not interchange. The correct gears are readily available, I should have the pinion in stock, not sure I have a bull gear on hand, but can check.
The difference if you go to 13 and 56 is obnoxious, you will be continually steering just to drive straight.
