40C cluthch problem

Post by fundytides » Wed Oct 22, 2014 11:48 am

I rebuilt the motor in my 40C a year or so ago and installed a rebuilt clutch assembly at that time. I haven't been able to get the correct adjustment on the clutch pedal. With full adjustment, I still have about 3" free travel in the pedal and have to depress the pedal well below the footrest to get any disengagement and even then the clutch dosen't seem to fully disengage. Could I have assembled something wrong or overlooked something when installing the clutch or throwout bearing and sleeve?

Did you adjust the pressure plate fingers using the JD gauge before reinstall?

No I didn't. I later installed steering clutches and used the gauge then but wasn't aware that it was something that needed to be done with the regular clutch. I assumed that the rebuilt unit would be set properly. Guess I was wrong?

Have to do the same thing on the main clutch as you did on steering. You use the same gauge just the part that sticks out the farthest for finger measurement.
Sorry for the bad news, but engine needs to come out to be fixed properly.

That's what I was afraid of. I'll have to chase down the tool. I gave it to a guy who was working on his steering clutches who passed it on to another guy. Oh well, that's the fun of old vehicles and equipment. Thanks for the help

Will the gauge for 1010 work on any other machines? Thanks, gregjo1948
