pad bolts

Post by JayinPA » Sat Nov 01, 2014 6:26 pm

What size and length of bolts for the track pads on a440 dozer? I did't take any out yet but they look to be about 1/2×13/4long.

Hi,

No, not really. I had the same 'Huh?' moment myself. I almost asked about it myself, but then I figured it out:

Thirteen Quarters? What an odd way to say it. That would be Three and a Quarter. Way too long. Those bolts are more like Two Inches. Oh. Wait a second. Missing Space Error! One and Three Quarters. Yeah. That is more like it! ;)

I see I missed the space in 1 3/4 . I found some bolts today. They are grade 5 instead of grade 8 but I think they will do.I have 7 pads that are loose.I guess it's time to get out the air wrench and torch.I need to get ready to drag some more firewood out.

Hi: The grade 5 bolts will stretch more over time and loosen. Dedicated pad bolts usually have a taller head, fine thread and are harder to withstand torqueing/tightening without lock washers, and the rigors of their job. If you use your machine lightly in soft soils, it's worth a shot to go with what you've got. Pad bolts are pricey. JMHO. Good luck. Paul

What I have done for years is grade 5, fine thread bolt, no lockwasher, standard nut. Torque until a good half inch impact stalls and quit. In more crawlers than I can remember, I bet I haven't retor questions 20 bolts.
A fine thread bolt exerts more pressure, the grade 5 bolts might stretch a little so they are under some tension, and you don't waste any torque by using standard nuts, and they re-torque easier if you ever need to.

I'll defer to Lavoy's thoughts; he's done this a lot more than I have. Paul

I agree true pad bolts are definitely stronger, no question. But spendy, so not worth the money to me, but sure won'the hurt anything to use them. I have seen them on tracks with short grousers and they can stick up above the grouser.
Factory deere bolts are only grade 5 for the two cylinder crawlers. The domed head pad bolts are a later invention, and anything more modern using a 5/8" pad bolt will have 4 of them, and probaby well up in the 150 horse range.
