Drilling the thermostat is only helpful if for some reason air is getting trapped behind it and prevents the thermostat spring from opening when it should; usually that occurs only if there is a head gasket leakage issue or another reason that the engine design causes air to get trapped.

My 2010 does not have an overflow reservoir; however when the engine gets good and hot it does start spitting fluid out of the overflow tube. One reason may be overfilling- since there isn't an overflow reservoir you don't want to fill to the top or it will spit quite a bit every time until it reaches its happy medium.
I would start with a new cap as JT suggested and also check if the cooling fins are clogged; oftentimes it is hard to check but they can get caked up. It also could be possible that the radiator tubes are clogged internally from precipitates and needs recored.

Drilling a small hole in the thermostat also helps to get hot water to the element in the thermostat so it will open a little sooner.
Coolant recovery systems require a special radiator cap that will hold a vacuum and pull the water back into the radiator when it cools off, otherwise the water just stays in the overflow jug.

Hi,

Could always do what we do with catch cans on race cars. Pour it back in later. ;)
