2010 alternator addition
I finally hooked up a Delco 10si unit to the dozer. It is charging but at a rate of 16 volts--seems too high to me. Some one had put a voltmeter on the unit so it was there--had too change leads to negative ground. I took the alternator to Advance store and had it tested last night and they said it was fine--what do I do now? thanks

16 volts is definetly too high. What did Advance say it was charging? You can probably install a new internal regulator. gregjo1948

The voltmeter works quite well when compared to a hand-held meter. Could the wiring hookup be a problem? I will tell how I have the system wired up:
The Batt terminal is connected to the battery cable (plus) at the starter.
the #2 terminal is connected to the Batt terminal on the alternator
the #1 terminal is connected to the ignition switch at a switched 12v terminal. Anyone have any thoughts as to this being correct? I got this setup from the internet on an old tractor site--don't remember which one. No light bulb is involved in the circuit. By the way, Advance testing could not tell me what voltage was being put out--the machine just ended up saying the "unit is OK" Thanks
