420 Motor Rebuild

Post by 57JD420C » Sat Dec 20, 2014 4:10 pm

Well....skidding out some more winters wood today, the motor on my 1957 JD 420 crawler puked out. Must have done something cause now it has a loud bang everytime it spins over. Where can i get a complete engine rebuild kit? Anybody familiar with Jasper Engines? Do they have rebuilt ones? Looking to get this rebuilt right away cause we need to finish skidding wood. Any info is much appreciated.

Engine parts are readily available, let me know what you need. Only rebuilt's I ever heard of was Valu-Bilt, and I wouldn't take on if they were free judging by other rebuilt products I have gotten from them.
I have a long block here that came out of a running crawler if your damage is catastrophic.

Did you figure anything out with your engine?

Engine Rebuild

Duke,
We will be tearing into the crawler this wknd. I am located just north of Lake George NY so it would be 722 miles to get your motor. I might have too. Seems to be a hard motor to come by for a complete one. I will be in touch.

UPDATE

Post by 57JD420C » Mon Dec 29, 2014 9:49 pm

After popping the head off and dropping the oil pan, the verdict is......a broken crankshaft!! Not sure how i ended up with that but its broke...in half. Now the next thing is to pull the motor. Have a lead of a few engines within 3 hrs of my house in NY so I am going to start there. Thanks for the info.

Also, Will a 440 engine bolt up to the 420 bellhousing? Will it fit with the hood and all the rest of the stuff bolted back on? Found a good 440 engine for the right price and wondering if it will fit!?!?!?!

Yes, it will bolt right in, might have to change some externals like throttle linkage.
