440 cid starter

Post by mapaduke@yahoo.com » Tue Dec 30, 2014 4:51 pm

If you have a good starter for your diesel 440, take good care of it, they are getting hard to find.
Delco no longer has them. Wilson is the only one. I have found offering a rebuilt between $300-$400.
I got a bandaid on mine for now crossing my fingers .

Duke, hopefully nothing now, I took the brushes and bendix out of another starter. It bench tested good.
It opened my eyes to the thought that if we cant get starters any more that it will put an end to these crawlers!
From what I can tell they were only used for the 440 and the 435 and no other application?

Well I ended up ordering a '' rebuilt starter'' off ebay , the one I went through the bendix gear must be worn enough so that it doesnt engage the ring gear, every couple of tryes it grinds. I did replace the ring gear while the engine was out so I know its good.
Just for the heck of it I checked with Deere and they say its no longer available.

Another possible source could be that south american Deere 445 somebody found pictures of. If it used a jimmy 2-53 it may have used the same starters.

*2 with what shinnery said.
Also, look for John Deere 435. That was the states tractor version that had the 2-53 in it.

Well hopefully this ebay special will work for me. I appreciate your in pout and encourage you to post any info you find about these starters. Hopefully it will help others with this problem.
I would hate to see these crawlers disappear just because they cant be started.

Hi,

You might find lots of good 2-53 parts off of a scrap 435. It wasn't the engines that killed them. It was the ring and pinion gears.

The 435 was made by taking a 430w and swapping in the 2-53 and making the PTO 1000 RPM. The idea was for it to be a haying tractor with the matching 1000 RPM baler.

But, too many folks used the diesel power for pulling, which prematurely wore the 430 ring and pinion. That was a costly fix, so lots were just parked in the back corner of a barn.

interesting info Stan, was the 420 ring/pinion the same?
the reason I ask is cause we had a 420 that we tried to pull the guts out of a few times, had fat, oversized fluid filled tires, but no gear problems.
the 420's were rare and never saw anything else(430,435) in the area where i grew up.
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

Hi,

Yes, it was the same on the 420w and 430w as on the 435. The difference is the diesel could pull three bottoms pretty fast, and that would wear the gears also pretty fast.
