jd 40c Transmission gears rotation

Post by rskalee » Sat Jan 17, 2015 6:55 am

Hello everyone,

I´m putting back together the gear clusters of my 40c. It´s everything back in the transmission housing.

The thing is that the Input Shaft cluster doesn´t rotate freely. Is that correct?

Are all shafts supposed to rotate freely when in neutral?

The PTO shaft rotates freely, but when it engages to the input shaft, it gets stuck as well.

Regards,

Ricardo

I don't know much about a 40, but I think the input shaft would have to rotate freely when in neutral. If you're sitting there with the clutch out in neutral the input shaft will have to spin.
Make sure you truly have it in neutral.

my 2cent opinion, disengage the clutch also, it might be dragging.
make sure pto is disengaged too.
if the gear cluster is locked up, you might have one in backwards, meaning the "cogs" are on the wrong side.
are you able to shift it when together?
did you add shims or make changes anywhere?
may have 2 gears interchanged into the wrong position?
maybe the shift forks/ shift lever is in the wrong position during assembly?
what was the first problem, before you disasembled it?

there are so many possibilities,, let us know more.
