has anyone ever put a sickle mower like a no.8 on a crawler?
Will the brackets off a wheeled tractor work?

I don't think the tractor brackets will work as is, they bolt to the side of the drawbar which is like an angle iron, no side to a crawler drawbar, so modification will be necessary.
No reason it won't work, use an overrunning PTO for safety, and don't use the reverser ever while running PTO.
