2010 Final drive gear has play
2010 Final drive gear has play
I am a newbie and I just bought my first crawler, a 1964 JD 2010. The previous owner said it has been sitting for the last 6 years. PLEASE help...
I have pulled the final drive pinion shaft as I am changing my left steering throw out bearing and steering clutches as they were rusted together. I have spent hours reading many helpful post's here and following the instructions on steering clutches. I did not drop the final housing but I pulled the oil pan off the final drive housing and I have about 1/8" back and forth movement of the final drive gear. Is this normal? Should the final drive gear be absolutely tight?

The axle bearings are timkin and are preloaded (they dont let the shaft move back and forth) you NEED to get a service manual ASAP..... is the axle moving also or just the gear? the gear is on a taper(press fit) on the axle shaft ......
here is a parts and service manuals for $77 http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-DEERE-2010 ... 2574fabe34 YES 3 ... parts are LAVOY ...OR JD and a good bearing house...also YOU DONT HAVE TO PULL THE FINALS TO DO THE WORK

2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
jtrichard, thank you for the manual's link. Manual shows removing final drive from tractor and using a puller to remove final drive gear.
I have already pulled the Pinion shaft & bearings, they look great. The final drive gear (still in housing on the crawler) has about 1/8" play back & forth.
I am at a loss

As this is my job for today, would you tell me how I can remove the flanged axel shaft, inner and outer cone bearings and seals to inspect but not pull the finals?also YOU DONT HAVE TO PULL THE FINALS TO DO THE WORK

Pat, I am following your post wit special interest as, I have a 1010 that has the same play. I dropped the oil pan because the drain plug was not removable and found lots of play in the gear. It was dry and has been used for quite a while in this condition. Hopefully you (and I) will not need a new gear.

Hi Scottyb, I was able to remove drain plug & drain but saw oil was milky and thick with a little gunk in it. So I dropped the oil pan to clean it thinking gunk may have settled in bottom. My gear looks great, but I can wobble it back & forth about 1/8". How much play does yours have? Do you know how to remove with out dropping final housing?
I'm sure we can get some insight from those here with more experience.

Pat - specifically, where is the motion? Is it rotational, as in the spline being worn? Or is it side to side (left/right) as in the bearings not adjusted properly?
I'm also watching your post - I have a 420 with 3 degrees of rotational slop in the splines. Several mechanics tell me to put it back together and use it - it won't wear out in my lifetime. Do I look like I have one foot in the grave? Ha!

Hi Paul, I have a very small amount of rotational, dusted off the Starrett's -it is .002, but it's the right to left, side to side motion about 1/8" is what concerns me.
I have so much apart right now, had to drain/remove oil reservoir & trying to figure out how to remove spring loaded handle without breaking anything to check that filter, nothing in my manual on how to do this, ANY SUGGESTIONS? Also followed pammark's instructions/pic's on pulling steering clutch housing so I could replace left throw out bearing & clutches as they were rusted together, found brake's are worn so I ordered/waiting on material as Reddirt instructed/pictured so I can reline them. I can't say enough how thankful I am for JD Crawlers Messageboard! And the vast experience here

Yep, my 2010 has the same style filter assembly and you are missing basically everything below the handle. The filter assembly is usually retained by a long bolt into the handle housing so it is not there or has fallen into the hydraulic tank. However it is long enough I would expect you would have seen it if it were there.
I believe Deere still has all of the individual parts but they are pricey when you add them up so may be better off hunting for parts from a boneyard to start.

(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment
The play in mine is side to side and about .5 inch, almost enough to start hitting on the housing. I have no idea how long it was used this way, I bought it from a scrap dealer, he thought it sat for 10 years before he got it. The teeth look ok and I filled it with oil. Only gets used occasionally to feed round bales over the fence to the horses. The engine on it was eithered many times and it smokes pretty bad so I might part it out eventually. Brand new complete undercarriage so we will see, perhaps I will find another one and make one good one.
