Oh Boy! Crawler #3 ...it's alive...it's alive

Post by kilohertz » Tue Mar 17, 2015 7:32 pm

Hi guys,

Looking at and perhaps making an offer on a 1958 440IC tomorrow and need to know if there is anything peculiar about his model. I have two 350's so am familiar with undercarriage and what to look for, but are there any items specific to the 440IC to watch out for? It's a 1958 2 cyl gasser, with an original bucket loader (well it has a JD placard with 91 239 on it.)

Appreciate your input.

Also, what would be the ballpark weight of this? I found the naked weight to be 6300 without loader and rear weights. I'm guessing maybe 10,000lbs??

Cheers

Semi-Grouser tracks on a loader. Non-hydraulic track adjusters.

Looks like it has set there a while. Motor might be set up. I don't see any cover on the air cleaner or exhaust.(NOT GOOD) Don't know your location for weather but, is there anti-freeze or drained? Probably has a reverser but, unless you can get it running you'll not know if it works and being manual, people don't always use the clutch to stop and shift it. That destroys a reverser. Good chance steering clutches will be stuck. No telling if the hydraulics will work as they should. I would guess 8500-9000 for weight. Unless you can make it run, I'd only offer parts machine price. gregjo1948

Thanks guys. It was covered, hood leaning against the boat which I removed for inspection. What would "parts machine" price be looking at it's current state? $2K, $1K less??

With all the unknowns, I would offer $1000.00 and may go up to $1500.00. Even if you don't part it out and decide to make it a working machine, you'll have a lot of labor and probably more cash invested. gregjo1948

Save the money and invest in a parts machine for your two 350s. You might then get to also acquire some other attachment(s) or upgrades that will fit your crawlers.
450`s c-dozer 6 way, b-loader.
350`s c-loader + ripper, b-loader with winch arch. B-loader with dozer pads
backhoe attachment.
1010 loader with forks for round bales
a few 610 Bobcats. many attachments

Hi,

I know I preferred my 350 over the 420....

Good morning,

Thanks for all the input, very much appreciated. To make a long story short, she is at home sitting in the driveway, and it was well within the suggested parts machine price :D. It was an engineering marvel of snatch blocks, chains and truck winch and she loaded right up on the flat deck trailer with ease. Got home and she rolled off the trailer with just a little help from the bobcat, and pushed it into place with the 350. Within 15 minutes I had the engine freed up (actually wasn't seized). I just put some ATF in the spark plug holes and put the blow nozzle in to spread around the oil and decided to push it in to seal and try to turn it over and low and behold, the engine turned over. Yeah! Charging the battery now, drained the fuel and am getting ready to remove and clean the carb. Check the points and cap and such. Should have it running by days ends.

Need to find a service manual for this beast. Anyone know of an online dowload, or does anyone have an emailable copy?

Thanks for all the help.

More details on the machine as I progress. Oh, yes it does have the reverser and 5 speed tranny.

It's alive..440IC is running after 4 years of sitting

It was pretty easy getting it going. Cleaned out the carb and made sure it was good to go. The ignition system was new, but the points had a film on them so cleaned them and finally had spark. Then...after 2 trips into town to get a new battery...first one was dead out of the gate, second one still was really slow cranking so I pulled the starter and cleaned it up, lubed etc and made a big difference. Put in a 1/0 ground cable right to the starter bolt. Once she was turning over, used Stan's 12V battery trick and connected a 12V batt thru jumper cables and she sped up a little and finally popped and fired and away she went. Warmed it up and it runs great. Putting on new hydraulic hoses today so I can try moving it. 55 Year old hoses are pretty rotten. The clutches felt like they were working and releasing, main clutch seemed okay. Will confirm everything once the hoses are on.

Need to figure out the charging system...not currently charging. Then if no major work required, get some paint and get her cleaned up. Nice little machine.

More later.

Hi,

One thing about a new battery. If it is truly new, they come empty of acid with a dry charge on the plates. The seller loads the acid, but it isn't really ready to go. A charging is required. A proper battery store will use a high-rate charger for 15-20 minutes. Me, I use a 2 amp trickle charger overnight.

The old 12 volt battery jump via skinny cables will also do the trick. The new battery ought to be fine after a couple hours on the machine running. Once you get the system charging, that is.

Another thing about new batteries is if the place loads them with acid when they get them, and do not charge them, and then sales aren't too swift, the combination of acid and low charge can lead to sulfated plates. In this case, the new battery never will work as it ought to. Just FYI.... Not saying that you have this issue....

Thanks Stan, appreciate the input. Yes, this store has just batteries, and they have been around for years and know their product. I trust them to do the right things. I also have an alternate energy business and work with batteries regularly. I have a complete 48VDC backup system for the whole house, with 5.5KW inverters, using "expired" railroad locomotive batteries. Can run the house for 2-3 days.

Anyway, will work on the charging system tomorrow and get that working, but in the meantime...here's the beast operating...
