440 icd battery size?

Can anyone recommend a battery for a diesel 440.
I have a new one from Tractor Supply with 750 cold cranking amps, new cables with the ground going right to the starter mounting stud and the starter has been gone through.
It was 30 degrees the other day and the battery didn't seem to crank it over fast enough to start it.
Engine has been rebuilt with 2 hours on it.

Wow that might not be good. I think my battery is a car quest brand, and I don't believe it's much over 750CCA. It spins mine over really well.
Did you try spinning the motor by hand to see if it feels good and free?

I rebuilt the engine my self and measured the journals and I have the right bearings in it and it turned over by hand ok before I put the rebuilt head on and now I need a 2 foot prybar to get it past the compression point.
Like I said its only got 2 hrs of run time on it and after it's been running it starts good within three revolrevolutions. That's why I was thinking I don't have enough cold cranking amps ?

I am running straight 30 weight oil.

I would lean towards starter problem assuming the battery is not defective.

I don't know if you're using starting fluid but, if you are, get the engine turning over before you spray the fluid. gregjo1948

I have $2000 in the engine rebuild I don't want to youse starting fluid unless absolutely necessary.
I will add that it has the crank mounted hydraulic pump for the loader , 21-1 compression and temps in the low teens the night before i'm sure don't help. It has a block heater and after an hour plugged in it starts right up.
That's why I'm leaning towards the battery, it's the only thing i'm unsure of.

Mine won't start well either when the temp is below 40 unless I plug in the heater. Like you, after about an hour it will fire up in a couple of rev's.

Sounds like you have it narrowed down pretty well. It could be the battery just isn't quite enough.
The only reason I suggested turning it by hand was because when I put mine together I ran into a couple things that caused the engine to bind up, and they weren't engine related (one was a stud too long that bolted the bellhousing to the engine, one was a spring between the transmission input shaft and engine propeller shaft). I thought that possibly something may have broke or moved after the 2 hours of runtime and was now causing something to bind up and not let the engine crank freely.

If the motor is the Detroit, starting fluid won't harm it. Almost seems like the manual says to use it. gregjo1948
