separating gearmatic 8A from adaptor housing . I can get about a 3/8 gap all around but cant get it any further off. looking into the 3/8 gap I can't see anything else other than the winch input.
is it maybe some slight rust i am fighting or is there a trick?
tried to delete this but i'll put in an update.
i got it apart, i was just being overly cautious.
wiggled it with a prybar until the gear/pinion slide past each other.

Did you get the bolt at bottom dead center on the underside?
I pulled mine last year and had the same problem. Had a nice gap and wouldn't come off.
Then looked and saw a stupid bolt right smack dab in the center at the bottom that is nearly impossible to get with a full dum full of cable.

i got it apart, was just being too cautious, i had it up on a bench and was more concerned with it coming off the bench.
as soon as i ate some wheaties, 3 cans of spinach and a couple beers, the thing decided it was going to cooperate.
the trick was to let the side without the gearbox wiggle loose about 2" and then the gears could be wiggled apart.
there were no locating dowels.
i will have to "go by feel" on the tooth engagment (mesh)when i put it together. or put in some dowels, got to look to see if it previously had any .
taking the winch apart now to check/replace anything.
got any tips? known parts houses for 8a's?
i only have a pdf containing 13 pages about the 8a.
the serial# tag is gone so how can i approximate that?
anyone have further information on the 8A's?

8A
I'm afraid to take my winch apart. Afraid of what I may find. It only works in the "take up" direction, as I have no controller. Would like to free it up, tho, so can pull the cable out more easily.

to RacinJason, that sounds like it may be a simple enough fix.
it might be a stuck rusted or out of adjustment band.
take the cover off the side having the hyd. line and have a look see.
you can always put it back on.
how do you actuate anything? just by controlling the PTO?
what model winch is it? I have an idea for a simpler mechanical controller instead of hydraulic.

To Pop Pop (and anyone else). It's a Gearmatic 8A and hasn't run in years, it seems. Yes, it reels in when you clutch it and put the PTO in Gear. I guess the controller only changes the direction of rotation?
I saved the photos Paul Buhler posted of the dual master cylinder setup, and am interested in your mechanical setup.
