420 reverser

Post by Bret4207 » Mon Mar 23, 2015 12:03 pm

There is a hole in the "torque tube" behind the bellhousing area on my 420. I can see a grease fitting in there. I'm assuming that;s for lubing the reverser? Or is it for the throw out?

Huh. So how do I check the lube in the reverser or top it off?

Never mind Lavoy, I found another post 5 years back where you answered the question.

The oil level in a gear type reverser is never checked. The trans oil flows down a galley on the LH side of the transmission case, out a hole in the trans case through the input shaft bearing into the reverser maintaining the level. The main thing on a gear type reverser is they need to be initially filled with oil if removed or rebuilt. If not, they will be ruined before enough oil will flow in to fill it up.

Hi,

You had me doing a double take there. When I see 420 and reverser, I automatically think differential style. And, no center frame and barrel bungs and 303 oil. ;)

I was racking my brain trying to figure out how it got lubed. I guess I'll change the tranny oil and have to call it good.

Now this has me curious. When I rebuilt my 440 trans I noticed this "galley" in the side of the case and the hole where it would lube the input shaft bearing. I just figured that's how that bearing got lubed. However I don't have a reverser, so what is keeping the oil from running up into my blank reverser case?

It passes through the front of the case into the input bearing holder and either drains back to the case, or continues downward to the front pinion shaft bearing, depending on serial number.

Wah! I drained the tranny yesterday. As I expected it was full of yellowish-tan colored baby poop! Tried flushing with diesel, ran it for 15 minutes and drained. I think I'm going to have to wait for hot weather to get it to really drain because the new stuff is milky already. At least I know it's gear lube and not pure water.
