Brake pedal & steering levers?

Post by PatPax » Wed Mar 25, 2015 6:57 pm

On my JD 2010 when I mash the brake pedal the right steering lever comes towards me & the left lever doesn't move at all, BUT both brake band's actuate. Is this normal?

Also the previous owner broke the left steering lever & replaced it before I bought it.

I don't know much about 2010 crawlers but I don't believe this is normal. The part about both brake bands actuating when you press the right pedal IS NORMAL as far as I know.
The right steering clutch lever coming to you when pressing the pedal is not normal IMO.
It sounds like you have some linkage froze together inside the steering clutch housing on the right.

Thanks whiteclipse16, I have opened both housings & everything seems to be working alike. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what else I need to check?

There is a bell crank on the steering lever shaft (horizontal) that is froze up and not free as needed... it is the one nearest the OUTSIDE of the tractor (ABOVE the brake band) watch as you pull the left lever and you should see it does NOT move for the first few inches of lever pull.... the right one will move as soon as you pull the right lever back ... PICS :( :( :(

Hi Richard, That is exactly what is was. I am now trying to free it up (tapping on it ect.) as the clutch adjustment is froze too.

I am new to this message board so let respond to the gent that has the hand brake problem as I have a similar problem After the crawler set for awhile I started it up and when I stepped on the foot brake and the left hand brake would come back toward me. I opened the left small panel to see what was happening and I found that the foot and left brake were locked together on the same shaft so I separated the two units with penetrating oil and a chisel. The two work separately now but I still have a another separate problem. I don't know how to adjust the brake system so that is my problem. Bob I hope this helps you.

Hi Bob, Do you have your manual? If not you will need to get one.
I found these post extremely helpful.

If I were to guess, I'd say that the shaft and sleeve on the steering lever that's under the 4 bolt cover is a bit sticky. I'd hit it with some penetrating oil every day for a few days and see if it will free up. I believe that the sleeve is for the brakes if I remember right, and when you hit the brakes the sleeve is supposed to move independently. A sleeve that is partially stuck will try to pull the lever too.
