SN Difference Spotted

Post by Stan Disbrow » Mon Jun 08, 2015 6:26 am

Hi,

Interesting. I was fluffing about ebay this morning looking at things 350, and tripped across an auction for a 350C. Nothing odd about that, but what is odd is the SN tag pictured. I reads like a modern tag, not one from the mid 80s. Here is what it read:

*T0350CE721784*
CRAWLER DOZER /85

All is in raised lettering, except the /85, which is done with a metal stamp.

The S/N is below that for a 350D, but in the 7xxxxx range they went to for the 350D, not the 393401 and up range for a 1985 350C.

As I said: Interesting.

Was this a running change in the S/N scheme or could this be a ReLife unit? I would think a ReLife unit would say so, but may be they just used an obviously different S/N to denote one. I really do not know, having never seen a ReLife unit in person.

But, the listing says this was a Federal forestry unit, and those were prime for having been passed through the ReLife program. Listing also says it was refurbished, but by someone other than Deere. Did Deere have contract refurbish houses within the ReLife program? Again, possible and I do not know. Heck, I feel lucky that I even heard of ReLife at all when it was going on....

Edit: Looking at the pics some more, I have some doubts this was ReLife. Too many little things I would expect to be renewed are not. Probably just the things listed as having been redone, were redone, by the shop listed. It still leaves us with the S/N difference. Somewhere along the way, that was changed for the C....

So, some food for thought to go along with the morning coffee after the donut is gone.... :P

read your post for 2015 where you stated you had a 350c and was looking for info on the year. I also have a 350AD crawler, very unique with a cab, serial # 350AD140570L, diesel and with "made in Germany" on tag. Still trying to decode # to determine correct year mfg. Can you tell me what you found out. Thanks tcowart@ptialaska.net. Thanks

Hi,

Tractor, JD350, Crawler Dozer, Gasoline, Collar Shift.

So, this means it is a Straight 350 without a Direction Reverser. They didn't put a letter in during the Straight 350 series to indicate the blade type on a dozer (as they did later for the 350B series).

You appear to have the loader serial number according to the straight 350 crawler info. Here is the note from the straight 350 parts catalog that applies to that. " *NOTE: SERIAL NUMBER PLATES ON JD350 CRAWLER LOADERS BEAR THE NUMBER 7350 AS A BASIC PREFIX PORTION OF THE SERIAL NUMBER. THIS IS NOT A MACHINE MODEL NUMBER AND SHOULD NOT BE USED TO IDENTIFY THE LOADER." The note is not in the B catalog but similar may apply to a B series as the loader attachments for a straight 350 and a 350B are separate catalogs from the crawlers. The loader is included in the C and D series parts catalogs.

You need to get the crawler serial number to confirm which series it is. If you can get that we can help you decode it. The serial number for a 350C would be on a tag which was riveted to the front of the battery box where you would see it looking at the operator's platform from the ground on the left side of the machine. That location was used starting somewhere in the 350B production run and continued through the 350Ds. If it is a straight 350 or early 350 B the tag will be on the right side of the panel below the seat, behind your right calf if you were setting in the seat. If the tag is missing you should see 1/8" rivet holes about 2 to 3 inches apart in one of those locations.

There is a C included in a number of the 350 (and 450) serial numbers that confuses people. Depending on vintage of the crawler, the serial number format (which changed with the location of the tag), and the location of the C in the serial number it can mean crawler, sliding gear transmission, or 350C series.

Best regards
Jim

That is the correct format for the machine serial number. This serial number confirms the machine is not a 350C. This serial number indicates it is a 1965 straight 350 crawler loader with a diesel engine and sliding gear transmission with a reverser. 1965 was the first year of the 350 model production.

Here is the machine serial number breakdown using the 350 Introduction from the JD parts Catalog for SN4E3D013367T:

SN = serial number
T = Tractor
4 = JD350
E = Crawler loader
3 = Diesel
D = Transmission (sliding gear with reverser)

Serial number: 013367 (This number falls in the 1965 build range using the serial number list on this site’s FAQ board)

T= (Build location) John Deere Dubuque Works

Is the 350 straight a good tractor or is a later year better. What’s the price range that these are going for? Thanks for for your help.

A 350 can be a good tractor. In theory a later one would be better, but the maintenance they have had can make a difference. Like most things improvements are usually made on things as they get newer. In this case the 350Cs (production started in 1975) had wet steering clutches which are less likely to give problems than dry clutches and there were improvements/refinements to the drive line. The 350Ds were last built in 1988. You can click on this link (https://www.deere.com/en/construction/n ... nt-models/) and find the brochures on many JD non current models to compare. Note the crawler 350 loader became the 355 and the 450 became the 455 along the way, separating them from the dozers.

As for price that is hard to say. The location, condition, and how a machine is equipped can make a huge difference. A loader can bring more than a dozer and a 4 in 1 bucket can increase that value. I recently saw a 350B loader, standard bucket, that needed work on Craigslist for 2500 and right now there is a 1980 350C dozer (3300 hours claimed, new chains and sprockets) the seller wants 15k for. I would recommend watching Craigslist, Facebook Market Place (if you use it), and the trade papers like Tractor House and Machinery Trader to get an idea of the prices in your search area.

Are you looking for a loader with a 4 in 1 bucket specifically or was it just one that looked like a good deal? The one you found may be a great deal, I won't say otherwise, that has to be your decision. If you are happy with it; it is a good deal regardless of what others may think. The point of checking the serial number for you was so you would be sure of what it really is. Many 350s and 350B have received a paint job and the wrong decals. Whether the decal error was accidental or intentional can be open for debate, but a 350C can 5 or more years newer than the last 350 built. Some guys don't find that out until they go to get parts for their "350C" and find out the parts they need are for a straight 350. That can be somewhat disappointing to say the least. Just my opinion and thoughts on things, hopefully others will pass their thoughts along. Best of luck whatever you decide to do.

The site has a dedicated picture server you can use by setting up an account with Lavoy. It is separate from this site so you have to log into it. You can use the same user name and password there as here if you want.

Some use a link to google drive or some other third party, not sure just how they do that.

For right now, if you want I will send you a PM with an email address so you can send the picture(s) to me and I will upload them to the server and post them for you.

That is a clean looking machine! With the added weight of the 4 in 1, the winch/fairleads the single bar grousers are going to bite like mad!! Be cautious as this will place extra stress on the u/c and steering clutches.
The winch and the fairleads are a nice extra. Wish it had a ROPS. Especially with the winch. The left track looks a little tight, I guess it could be b/c it has tension on it when parked. I would look for a little more sag when you move the crawler.
Are you the new owner!!
Best regards, Bruce
