JD450 thru JD450G Serial Numbers

Post by Stan Disbrow » Wed Jan 30, 2008 1:40 pm

Hi,

Here are the serial numbers, by year, for the JD450 through JD450G models.

JD450 Straight

1965 10001 - 16159
1966 16160 - 42766
1967 42767 - 64999
1968 65000 - 82275
1969 82276 - 102143
1970 102144 - 117587

JD450B

1970 117588 - 121123
1971 121124 - 138713
1972 138714 - 142294
1973 142295 - 164046
1974 164047 - 185798
1975 185799 - 207555
1976 207556 - ?

There is an overlap in 1975 thru 1976 where JD450B and 450C models were made concurrently. We do not know the exact serial number of the last JD450B as a result.

The main differences between the JD450B and JD450C are that the C went to a 4/219 CID Turbocharged engine from the 4/219 CID normally aspirated engine in the JD450B. Also, the JD450C changed from dry to wet steering clutches.

However, there are some late JD450B's out there with wet steering clutches. The JD450B units were produced along with the JD450C until the demand for the non-turbo engine dropped off. The JD450B units changed over to the wet steering clutches used in the JD450C when the stock of dry-type steering clutch parts was depleted.

JD450C

1974 191829 - 219515
1975 219516 - 240367
1976 240368 - 261217
1977 261218 - 287194
1978 287195 - 313947
1979 313948 - 340909
1980 340910 - 355420
1981 355421 - 372281
1982 372282 - 389142
1983 389143 - ?

Again, we have an overlap between the JD450C and the JD450D. The power went up all of 3 HP, so I really don't know why there was an overlap this time.

This makes little sense to me, actually. The serial number list says that the JD450D started in 1982 just past the serial number shown for the start of the JD450C 1983 production. In 1984, the serial numbers jump to 700010, and I can't believe Deere made a couple hundred thousand 450D's in 1982!

JD450D

1982 389172 - ?
1983 700010 - 703984
1984 703985 - 711936
1985 711937 - End (probably 715503)

JD450E

1985 715504 - 725999
1986 726000 - 733269
1987 733270 - 741668
1988 741669 - ?

Here we go again with another overlap. Just go with it, figuring on the usual reason of exhausting some factory parts stock in what is called a 'running change'.

JD450G

1987 736319 - 742813
1988 742814 - 755244
1989 755245 - 765933
1990 765934 - 771515
1991 771516 - 776121
1992 776122 - 784948
1993 784949 - 789485
1994 789485 - 805221
1995 805221 - End

Note that there's no JD450F. That's a savvy marketing idea. Who wants to buy an 'F' in anything?? :P

The source of the data is from a farm equipment quick reference guide that's intended to assist dealers in determining the year and current market value of trade-in equipment.

The guide as such only lists the beginning serial number for each year. I'm making the reasonable presumption that the last serial number for any given year is one less than the starting serial number for the successive year.

Thanks to Digitup for sharing the relevent pages from his guide with us so we can determine what year a given machine is.

wet clutches on 450B

Post by jbrown » Thu Mar 06, 2008 10:46 am

I was reading the 450c serial number board, and they said lator 450B's had wet clutches.5Star John Deere dealer says non of the 450B's had wet clutches. It would not be an easy swap.the steerring controls are all different. They never ran out of Dry disks they still make them today. He's the parts manager and been there over 25 years. If its got wet steering clutches its a C.

The northern dry clutch machines were filling up with moisture at a rate that was wrecking the machines .With condensation / cooler weather and high humidity working against them as well as International and Cat having new oil bath clutchs putting Deere on the looseing end this is when my dad got the last of the 450Bs and it was wet clutch no turbo and a B on the side of it .Harvester and Cat were selling wet clutch and Deere was down on sales with new tecnology. When we got ours I think the Cs were just going to hit the dealers .We didn't have a 450C for 4 or 5 years after that and I had my first 550 as they came out just afterwords we got a 450C this was dads last 450 and yes it was a C not the best Deere dad ever owned It got traded on a new 550A within 3 years . We never realy went back to the 450s after that .There was a reason John Deere went wet clutch but they were nearly the last on the band wagon and they did this slower than most But John Deere did this a lot over the years .I cant help think if JD gave up on the 2cyl idea a decade earlyer sales would have been better also but who knows maby not !!.Digitup.

450B/C hybrid?

Post by Mulerider » Tue Jun 10, 2008 9:22 pm

First post/great forum:

My neighbor and I purchased a 450B (maybe?); anyway, the tag says "Duplicate Plate", and reads "JD450BC150623*". It is a turbo engine, with R-N-H-L and 1-4 range to the left of the driver.

Had the brake bands and clutch discs replaced (both sides); dry clutch unit.

Any guess as to what we've got?

Greg

The 450Bs had turbo's dealer added and they found that when in confined areas the turbo helped burn fuel cleaner .The turbo just gave it a bit more snort and took some lag out of mid range that the 4219 was famous for .The engines were not turbo built yet but just dealer addons .I think that change came with the 4239 series engines .they also added one or two extra crank bearings and a new combustion chamber at the 4239 engines Now in your serial number the B is modle and the C is for crawler tractor is what this means .Digitup.

The reason that it says duplicate plate is Mother Deere dosen't like machines with serial plates missing !!,That S/N plate must have went missing at one time .I had one of the 550s lose a plate one time a pice of steel pealed it off while sticking out just right .I remember that I got a pice of Tupper Wear on the starter a new serial number plate and a safty sticker installed while stoped for lunch one day. BC serial number

Post by jbrown » Fri Jul 25, 2008 9:40 am

Right B stands for the model and C stands for the C frame carring the 6 way blade.I saw one at auction, 450C instead of CC it was 450CJ.I ask the dealer and he looked it up J ment it was built with no blade.just draw bar.Ofcourse CL ment loader.I just saw another guy this week near binghamton NY trying to pass off his 450BC as a 450C.Anyways to my main point !I just bought a trade in.450CC s/n 389114.I looked up on list it showed 1982. also on S/N plate beneath the S/N was place of MFG and the 2 numbers 83 ? When picking up filters at dealer he looked up S/N came back with Factory invoice of 15APR83 Five Star dealer in Wysocks PA. It gave the Customer name delivery date 27APR83 and his name.Same guy who traded it in turns out. so the parts guy said it was a 83 not 82.so that must be why the 83 was stamped on SN plate? It showed warranty expired 27APR84 one year lator. Gave engine S/N which matched up. One thing , it had the build code and it said 9499 Winch Drive. The machine had no winch or PTO. I have the original owner phone number I might give him a call to see if any querks about machine and if it had a PTO or Winch. And what year he remembers buying it.

I have noticed some of the Ebay rip off artists are doing that They are useing the second letter and trying to pass it as a C series instead of a B series then they protect there assets with[buyer beware] We can say anything and get away with it .They make you wonder why anyone would buy anything big buck on there. I make sales Internationaly my self and I know you don't sell some thing that it isn't or you are treated like a riipoff artest quickly .Digitup.

A 5 star Deere dealer is one that had a lax IQ test and a true false drug test . I have a few pieces of iron and none of it gets touched by a Five star Deere dealer or his neanderthal mechanics unless my mechanic is close real close! Digitup.

According to the chart (assuming it is a 450B), your machine would be a 1976.

Out of curiousity, does your 450B have wet steering clutches? Really late model 450Bs got them when the dry clutch parts ran out.
