40C starter motor-new member ,new post

Post by santafebreeze » Fri Sep 10, 2010 5:50 pm

It was a pleasant afternoon. I got my 40C to sputter to life for 10 intoxicating seconds after a 2 year slumber. Ser# 70923
I am fairly certain my starter is in need of an overhaul. It cranks very slowly ( cables and connections are perfect, really) and heats to the touch very quickly. I see no typical mounting flange on the starter. I looked thru 50 plus pages of topics here and did not find what I was looking for.
It looks as though maybe it might be held with a pinch bolt through the engine casting? If that is the case, there is a tragically mangled broken bolt in line with the stater shaft axis that is broken below the surface and some off-center attempts to try and drill it out were made by a previous owner. I saw this when I got the crawler 10 years ago but I didn't know what it was, I guess I still don't. Any light on the subject would be most welcome. Thanks for letting me join the group.

The best single tool a person can own is the JD service manual for their particular model. I do not waste my money on the I & T versions.

As for the starter, it could be binding due to not being lined up properly. It could simply need new brushes and the armature cleaned up. Or, it may need a complete rebuild with new bushings and all.
Let us know what you find.
I have seen some of those pull switches on the starter that partially short out due to the age of the insulation. That will heat one up in a hurry.

I believe you're right about the brushes, bushings and armature. I just don't know how to get the thing out.
Yes a manual is essential, mine met an timely death (a story for another time). That will be my next purchase.
Thanks for the reply.

That is a set screw, harder than hell to drill unless you have a carbide drill bit. If you can get at it, weld a washer to the broken off part of the set screw, then weld a nut to the washer, and it will come right out.

OK, I've got my work cut out for me. Of course the bolt/setscrew is snapped off below the surface of the casting by 3/16ths. I suppose a heli-coil will be necessary before I'm through. I wish I had enough to weld to on the bolt. Is it an allen head or a bolt and a lock nut set up originally?
Many thanks

The original is an Allen head screw with a dull point at the end that goes in the groove in the starter. The nut on the outside keeps it tight. The nut is loosened, then the Allen screw is backed out.

Tack,Chip, Tack, Chip, Tack, Chip, you get the idea. I eventually built up enough material to weld a 3/8 washer on to the build up then several tries with various bolt and rod stock and finally I got it with an old form stake welded to the washer/slag pile I built up and a pipe wrench. I felt a discouraging give as I had on the other 3 tries, but this last time it was not the rod breaking away from the build up rather the broken stud breaking free from the bottom of the hole. Out she came! I would send pictures but 1) I can't find my cable to download pictures from my camera and 2) I know there are probably some real welders or pipefitters out there that might hurt themselves falling out of their chairs laughing at the pidgeon poop welds.
Again many thanks gentlemen.

Make sure to replace the set screw with the correct piece, anti-seize the threads when reinstalling, and don't over torque the jam nut.
