JD 440IC Dozer at Auction in Missouri on 5/6/15
JD 440IC Dozer at Auction in Missouri on 5/6/15
Good evening-
There is a 440IC dozer at auction in Missouri (just outside Kansas City) through Purplewave. The rails on it look good and thick, there is still some adjustment for the front idler, and if I am seeing it right they look like 2 bolt pads. However it does look like there is a little pin boss wear. The serial number makes it a 1959.
I thought some may want to know about this.

Hi,
Differential steer? Man, those are a real end-of-a-whip experience. My Terratrac was that way.
The new owner will be glad they are wrong about that. Might not be so glad the hours are off by a couple digits....
Gotta love it!

It ended up going for $9K, excluding the buyer's fee of 10% and sales tax. The new owner may not like finding out that it needs new bottom rollers on top of that. It did seem like a really nice one though if you have money to spend.

Am I correct that those were 2 bolt rails, and thus original track links? If so those were unusually nice.

Yes they were two bolt pads, but that does not make them original. I have a customers 440 sitting here now that has rails as nice or nicer than those, but obviously not original to the crawler. I have had many over the years that have had new rails put on them later in life that were the correct rails, but no original.

Hi,
No, the bolt is stuck where the trans Reverse is. That is a safety precaution.
With a reverser is is a Large Error to use the trans reverse with the reverser in reverse. Blows the reverser with great ease.
It would be OK to use the trans reverse with the reverser in forward, but given the major headache of someone making the dual reverse mistake, most folks stick in that lockout bolt.

Hi,
That would probably be for the best. My dad stuck a bolt in the trans reverse slot on my 58 420c. That was back in 67. It is still there, even though I learned enough to never make that mistake not long after he put it in. One never knows when one might let someone else on to play for a bit. This way, that particular mistake will never happen.

I never leave them in just in case I get in a situation where I need to pull a heavy load in reverse. In that instance, reverse in the trans is a better deal so the power is going straight through the reverser.

Hi,
Yes, that is a good point. It would be even better when talking about a loader. I have never pulled anything heavy with my dozer in reverse, always using the drawbar in forward. But, a loader runs backwards with a heavy load often.....
I am trying to teach some grandkids about these odd pieces of equipment granddad has, so I think I will leave the bolt their great granddad stuck in for a while longer....
