Starter Drive Spring for JD440 Gas Crawler

Post by jd440 » Wed May 11, 2005 1:46 pm

I am looking for a spring that fits into the start assembly and connects the bendix drive to the starter motor. Mine is broken and my 1958 JD440 crawler can not be started.

Any suggestions where I could obtain one?

Thanks

My guess is you wil have to replace the drive itself. The spring is an obsolete number, no longer available. I will do a little more diggind, but am pretty sure that is the case.

I assume the starters are totally different from the 420 I'm working on and the 440 you have there jd440.. but a new drive is well worth it. I just had one put on my starter as I had it reworked. Good luck.

Hi Jimmy,

It appears that the starter is the same on John Deere models L, LA, M, MT, 40, 420, 430, 440, 320 and 330.

The spring is a part number A 566000, and it is used on Allis Chalmers, Case, International, Massey Ferguson and of course, John Deere tractors.

With this number of makes and models, I am sure I can find a replacement spring. In fact, I just found out that Valu-Bilt and Classic-Ag have listings for it.

Derek -

That's interesting. I know they said it wasn't a problem at all when I had the starter totally rebuilt; windings and all. I know it came back with a new drive and I'm glad it did.. kicks in and out nice and smooth.

I checked a couple sources, and the only thing available was the whole drive. If you do find springs, and there is not much price difference between it and the whole drive, I would put in the whole drive.
