I am looking for a spring that fits into the start assembly and connects the bendix drive to the starter motor. Mine is broken and my 1958 JD440 crawler can not be started.
Any suggestions where I could obtain one?
Thanks

Hi Jimmy,
It appears that the starter is the same on John Deere models L, LA, M, MT, 40, 420, 430, 440, 320 and 330.
The spring is a part number A 566000, and it is used on Allis Chalmers, Case, International, Massey Ferguson and of course, John Deere tractors.
With this number of makes and models, I am sure I can find a replacement spring. In fact, I just found out that Valu-Bilt and Classic-Ag have listings for it.
