Wanted--Dad's JD 40 Crawler.
Wanted--Dad's JD 40 Crawler.
I'm looking for my father's 40C crawler. It had a "Seattle Iron Works" blade and a CarCo winch. The canopy had a round top. Last I heard, about 20 years ago, it was in the Port Angles (Washington state) area.
Reply on this message board or email me: brianbrehmeyer@yahoo.com if you've seen something like it. Even if it isn't for sale, I'd like to take a look at it.
I've dug through what few papers I have but haven't come up with a serial # yet. It had a 5 roll undercarriage and was purchased new around '53 or '54.
This is a picture taken when he first got it. Kid in the picture is my older brother.

Hi,
I wish you much luck in finding it. I have my dad's 420c, and know exactly why you're out there looking.

Man this could be it
Hey, it's in Washington State. Can't tell if 4 or 5 roller, has externally mounted blade. No winch, but with that odd cage I hope its the one. Joe

Thanks guys
Thanks for the reference. I'm trying to arrange a personal look see. There is no winch on the ebay crawler. The blade and cab are identical to my father's 40C.
I don't see a dent in the cab I expected, nor a repaired crack in the transmission case.
I'll keep you posted.

It is dad's crawler---bringing it home Sunday!
Thanks for the reference guys. The seller and I have agreed on a price and I'm going up to Whidbey Island to pick it up Sunday, 11/12.
The winch was taken off by the 2nd owner after dad sold it (broken bull gear). The current owner has had it for several years and, as I understand it, did the painting and refurbishing. I'll pump him for history information when I get up there.
The dash has been replaced with diamond plate. Looks OK, but I'll be looking for a replacement black dash. Undercarriage has some broken welds and broken repair welds.
My oldest boy came in as part owner, hopefully he has deep enough pockets for us to restore it to as original as possible.

Dad's old 40C
Yeah, I don't believe in the supernatural, but it sure is a huge coincidence that I should start looking just a week or so before it is up for sale on eBay.
And, when I decided to let it go, my kid calls up and throws some money in the pot. Apparently he was talking to my nephew. My nephew got the home phone number of the seller so I could make a deal after the auction closed.
Like I said, I don't believe in fate, or a conspiracy, but a lot of things happened at the right time, in the right order...
